My son's 2000 GTI 1.8T seemed to have blown an oil pump. When we pulled the pan to take a look we found that the chain driving the pump had come off the crankshaft drive cog and ripped teeth off in the process. My guess is that the pump somehow seized and something had to give.

So, it seems that you can't get that cog as a separate part - it's part of the crankshaft.

Here are some of our options:

* get replacement crankshaft. It's alleged that we can replace that while the engine is still in the car though I think we have to remove the tranny. New crankshaft is about $1K plus other parts (oil pump, drive chain, maybe bearings).

* get junkyard crank - can't seem to find one anywhere.

* replace engine - we've found some in the 2-3K range - seems a bit excessive as a solution.

* we've got an option on the innards from a VR6 which might run us 1500-1800. We'd have to swap the engine, tranny, wiring harness & ECU and there are enough questions on this approach that I'm quite reluctant.

Any thoughts?

In the meantime I'm going to try and get the Focus back on the road so he has some other means of transportation albeit pimped out for rally and all.

Thanks.

Simon

I apologize for my non-value adding comments...but I couldn't resist. Sorry to hear about it Simon.

I would lookout for a totalled VW with a 1.8t in it. That often is cheaper than buying just the engine.

The VR6 should be straight forward if you have the whole car to work from.

It is hard to believe that the gear is part of the crank, it would be way simpler to machine and press fit one(which does not mean you could get it seperate) If it is is a press fit part maybe a machine shop could make a replacement.

Simon, the worst case scenario is that the spare metal bits are circulating in the oil and causing beau coup damage. The chance that this is actually occuring approaches unity. Slapping fixes on the block will get expensive; so I recommend a new powerplant. Or a V8, but that's simply silly.

That has ocurred to me. But since the metal bits came from the thing that drives the oil pump, there's was nothing pushing the contaiminated oil around the engine. I think the teeth shredded and dropped into pan.

Or maybe that's wishful thinking.

A Caddy 502 with an Eldorado tranny running the rear wheels would be sweet.

"Hello, Geico? I'm afraid tell you that my son took a wrong turn on NC-751 today and accidentally drive his GTI off of the dam and into Jordan Lake. Yes, into the lake. Yes, it is at the bottom. After he swam up he mentioned that the water may have done some damage to the oil pump. I'm terribly afraid it is a total loss. We will need to replace it with a Ford Focus. Send money."

The insurance company might event give you a bit extra knowing there is one less VW on the road......that's less of a risk to all of the other insured non VW drivers out there.

I love it. Making fun of Volkswagens is even easier than making fun of retarded kids.
