What's the best thing to do with old rotors? I've heard some people say they just throw them in the trash. Can they be recycled as scrap metal or something?

Sure. Just take them to your local dump/recycling facility. They'll have a place for stuff like that.

Yep I was just up at the dump dropping off used oil at the recylcing area. I asked about old rotors and other misc. steel/aluminum parts I want to dispose of. They said no problem.

I probably have the most uniqe way of recycling rotors.

I give them to my Dad to use as weights for his Gil nets. He says they will dig down into the river bottom and not let the net drift in a current.

Does he need anymore of them? I have a set of 4 that are low mileage, only driven on weekends, and only for a couple of hundred miles. Still perfect condition for boat/net anchors

I put one in the recycle in the other week and the city of Durham took it away, so I assume it's prefectly good recycle material.

Cool. I'll try that this week.

Well, so much for that idea. City of Durham took all other recyclables but left the rotors at the curb. In the trash they go.

Here at the Beach I have to take heavy items like rotors, cranks, and such to one of the recycling centers we have around the county. I can take tires, batters, oil, and other hard to get rid of suff.

FWIW, most auto repair shops have a scrap metal bin or similar that they throw all their metal junk parts in. Then folks will come by and pickup the scrap metal and haul it to the scrap place for $$$. It's usually NOT a company that collects the scrap- but individuals who do this to make a living, or supplement their income with scrap metal $$$.

I'm sure if you asked your favorite repair shop, they would not mind if you threw your old metal parts in their bin.

On that note....I went by HH&W a few months back and had some old rotors in the back of my truck. Mark spotted them and offered to take them off my hands real quick. I think he has a guy that comes by there.

Otherwise I was just going to throw them in the *metal* dumpster at the dump off Aviation.

The scrap metal recycler in Garner (Old Garner Rd?) will pay you for the rotors based on weight. If you've got aluminum, they'll really pay you - I got $10 or $20 (can't recall exact amount) for an old Mustang wheel a few years ago.
