Am putting my rebuilt 4age engine together, and I've run into special head bolts. Bolts have twelve points, not twelve sides but points. Toyota parts people said a torx socket would work ...NOT!!! Does anyone have one of these tools or know where to get one. same parts guy stated it would take thirty days to order one.
Also I could use an extra engine stand if anyone has one laying around that they are not using.
thanks

Bernie,

I think what you need (what Brad's link shows) is a "triple square" or "XZN" driver. Google "triple square driver" and you should find plenty of places that you can order one. I have two myself for the 914. I think mine are 8mm and maybe 12mm. If that size will work let me know if you want to borrow mine for a few days.

I believe that these usually are used in places where higher torque is specified and a regular Allen or Torx is not used. Do not try to use a torx as you can damage the bolt.

Richard

Richard, upon closer inspection of Brads link I see I was in error. The tool I need is a socket with twelve points. the tool in the link and I suspect the triple square fit into a recess in the bolt, I need a socket that will fit over the bolt. Still looking thanks

And a normal 12 point socket won't work?

X2

A pic will say a thousand words. I think you just need a 12 point socket. Honda flywheels and clutches use these.

The points on this bolt are very thin and I fear if I got after it with the wrong tool I'll destroy the bolt head. Toyota calls out Special Service Tool
09205-16010 cylinder head bolt wrench.
I'd take a picture of the Damn thing but it's recessed below the valves and I don't think I can get enough light down there to see it .

Paging Scott Johnson to thread 4949.

I'm of the impression that head bolts are going to be made of a harder material than your sockets, and the socket would fail before the bolt head would strip. Not even the French would design a head bolt that would strip before being torqued to yield.

Not sure where you live Bernie, but I probably have what your looking for, including the engine stand. I had to buy special tools for both the 3GSTE and the 5SFEs that I rebuilt. I'm on the south side of Raleigh, near Lake Wheeler.

I freaked out too when I saw similar bolts on my old CRX. Glad to hear you got it to work. It about time you got to working on that car
