I need to get something to limit the car, floating the valves is kinda hard on the top end. This past weekend I was running about 1K into redline and was to busy doing a bad job paying attention to where i was going to also watch the tach. Pertronix has one for around $120 that adjust in 100rpm increments. But if anyone has tried another to recommend, please let me know.

I couldn't imagine the damage the Miata would have w/o a rev limiter. How many "blips" would you say it had over the past weekend Ryan? Close to 100?

$120 sounds reasonable to me. MSD and others have similar units as well.

For another $100 you can just get an aftermarket ignition like the Crane HI-6 (I'm partial to the Crane because I use one). Better spark and a built in rev limiter.

For reference, my car calls for 0.032" gap on the plugs and I run 0.045"

Thanks. I had a Crane unit in my 302 Bronco.
Another forum brought up MegaSquirt, if it fits the rules I might look into that as well.

Doesn't spending this kind of money on a cheap car push you up on the "Chuck Pax System"?

True. I may break $2000 by year end. Real cash investment, so far, looks to be under $1300(I will figure it out, all the reciepts are in a folder). I will probably end up putting in the Pertonix unit, to keep costs down and avoid punching a hole in the side of the motor.
As much trouble as I got in for not checking in, I can only imagine what oiling the course would dofor me.

MSD sells a "stand alone" Soft Touch rev limiter. It comes with a selection of chips. You can add an adjustable RPM Module Selector to change settings more conveniently. Summit Racing's catalog used to be a good source for buying them.

http://www.msdignition.com/1rpmaccessories.htm

Not Stock legal for folks with pre stock rev limiter cars :D

I checked out Megasquirt, MSD and Pertronix. I think I will have to go with the Pertronix. It is a little cheaper than the MSD when you count the chip sets and easier to adjust(Plus I have an account with Summit, they have both)
I really like the Megasquirt, but it is out of budget, even in kit form. Maybe some day.

Looks like a good choice. It wasn't even made when I bought my msd years ago. :(

I have a rev-limiting rotor in the 914...I have it on the -6, and I also had one for the -4 cylinder motor. They work on centrifugal force and are pretty damned cheap at $25. They have always worked well for me, you might want to check into if one is available for your application....

Thanks. I will look into that as well. Is that the red one that was at Sanford on the 11th? Made me sad. I had one just like it years ago, a '73, 2.0 36,000 miles and it got totalled. :(

Rev limiting rotors are (or were) available for Bosch and Lucas distributors. I used them in my ASP Lotus Europa. To adjust the rev limit higher than the factory setting I lightened the weight and/or moved the shorting bar a little further away. I can get a Bosch one for the formula ford but adjusting the rev limit would require a bunch of test runs. Easy to do with a street legal car . . . hard to do with a race car with only 1.5 inches of road clearance. Plus rotors have a limited life so the cost can add up.

Dean Furr had one of the rev limiting rotors in his first sptifire. It became rather inefective after putting the MSD ignition on the car.

Did it cut out at lower revs? If so, then I would say a lot more available voltage to jump the gap to the shorting bar sooner. Conversely, if it didn't work at all I'm not sure what was going on. Maybe there was so much energy/current available that the shorting bar still allowed enough current to fire the plugs.

Mine (no MSD with Lotus) always allowed higher revs with fresh plugs. Of course, the only times I had fresh plugs was for big events when I wanted to turn the engine higher anyway. :D
