Damn, I didn't mean to turn this into a SUV vs Truck thread! Get whatever you want :)

If I were you though I'd at least test drive a Dodge. A Ram could probably be had cheap.

I personally also have come to the conclusion that I will never buy a new car again. The savings on a 4-8k mile used car/truck are phenomenal. My Durango was $16k off sticker with 4k miles on it.

IMO whenever making a car purchase decision the best thing to do is estimate not how much you're going to be paying, but what you expect depreciation to be over the course of you owning it. All of my most recent car purchases will have very, very low depreciation.

The best value for your tow dollar is a used ambulance. You can get something on a Freightliner chassis with under 150k miles for $15k. It's safe to let the thing idle all day running the AC, they usually come with pretty large inverters on them so you can run all sorts of fun appliances, and it should tow anything you want. Won't fit in the garage, most likely.

I'm surprised the Titan crew cab will fit the garage but the new Tundra won't. You talking just a couple inches here, or what?

Life is full of interesting options.

The Titan crew cab is shorter than the current Tundra crew (Titan has a 5.5' box, Tundra crew has almost 6.5' box) The '07 Tundra crew will be an even 1 foot longer than the current Tundra crew.

My garage is a pathetic 20x20...

We have an Armada, and experienced the dreaded brake problem..which was a warping of the front rotors. After the upgrade we have had no more issues. They should have built them with the larger rotors to begin with. As far as towing, I have NO issues with the diff, or overall temps at all. having the optional trans/diff cooler I think makes all the difference in the word.

I have towed 5000+ lbs for 8 hours at a time with no issues. As a matter of fact, the towing capacity of the Titan, and Armada made towing such loads easy. Only the Domestics have the same type of capacity, and only the full size ones.

On a related note, one question I'm honestly wondering about -- why a truck and not an SUV? Personally, I vastly prefer an SUV. The biggest argument I can find is "because I have to haul dirty stuff once in a while". That's what I have a utlity trailer for -- for the 10 times a year I need to haul something big or dirty. The rest of the time, the ability to lock my stuff up, have a big "wagon" for hauling, etc trumps the need for a bed.

Just curious about your opinion, I half-expected you as new parents to go the SUV route...

That about sums it up. We don't have storage space for a trailer at home, so suddenly "let's get some mulch today" turns into, "well, if we want to get much we have to go the storage place and get the trailer," (it's stored cheaply, not convienently) blah, blah, blah.

Lots of things would make an SUV more feasible, but they all add to my honey-do list. If I had a tire rack and box on the trailer, etc. I know I've hauled my waste oil to the store in the back of the celica, but I really prefer to do it in the Tundra.

Not to mention that extra sheet metal for the roof costs about $10,000-12,000 over the truck versions.

Still, it's worth considering the SUV option.

Scott, what's your price range / budget for a tow-capable family-friendly hauler? $30k? $25k?
