Any recommendations for either tool? Is this something that is "OK" to cheap out on? Any good tool makers other than snap on I should look at?

Thanks,

phil

For Compression Testers, I've got the Sears cheap model (~$25) and it has worked well the few times I've used it:

YMMV.

The Sears tool looks like a good one. Whichever tool you get, just make sure it threads into the spark plug holes. The "old style" compression testers just pushed in, and they won't work with most overhead cam motors.
It's useful to also have a bleed valve so you can recheck a cylinder without having to unscrew and re-screw (word?) the end into the spark plug hole.

go here: http://www.thetoolwarehouse.net/shop/TTW304.html

The KD compression gauge is a good one as is the leak down tester @ 61.00. I've seen other online tool companies asking as much as 116.00 for the same tester.

PS you do need a small compressor to use the leakdown tester.
