I bought Dishman's fancy custom tire trailer recently. As you would expect, it's in almost pristine condition. And it's pretty trick, with torsion bar suspension, a tire rack wide enough for 4 315 MM wide Z/06 tires (or 6 245 MM wide Mustang tires, or 61 Miata tires) and a fancy diamond-plated aluminum storage box. However, it is four years old, and I want to at least add some grease to the hubs before this weekend. I need to find a grease that is the same, or at least compatible, with what is in there already.

Figured I would just contact the manufacturer, SouthSport Trailers of Orlando, and ask. But their website is up for sale and nobody is answering either phone number - at least at 7:30 PM tonight. I think my trailer is an orphan.

Anyway, the overflow grease in the Buddy Bearing caps is purple. Anybody want to hazard a guess as to its type or a compatible type to add?

Art,

The SouthSport trailers are very cool and expensive. I do beleive you are correct that they went out of business.

I agree with Rich. It's probably Royal Purple. I'm running their stuff in the engine, trans, axle, and PS unit. It's pretty good stuff and makes a good alternative to Redline or Amsoil.

A good local place AND good prices for Royal Purple:

Global Performance Motorsports
8628 Barefoot Industrial Drive
784-0055

Ask for Jerry or Ralph.
They are right Krause and England as soon as you turn the corner, on the right after that big sand pit or whatever it is.

The wheel bearing grease cartridges for the small hand pump I picked up at Northern tool contains purple grease?

My Marine use grease is also purple. Must be a popular color. It is possible that the color designates some moisture resistance, but that is purely conjecture.

If it is Royal Purple then it is just dye so it looks purple when you open the container. Put their oil in the engine and drive the car a bit. Then check your oil. No more purple. It's just a marketing gimmick to go with their name. But so far the quality of the fluids is pretty good. I'll know how well their oil stands up to a beating soon. I have a sample on its way to Blackstone now.

Their may be other products that use the colors as an index or designator though Charlie.

So I called Global Performance Motorsports and the lady who answered the phone didn't know what Royal Purple was, so she passed me on to one of the mechanics (didn't get his name). He guessed that what I had was Mobil 1, since it's a dark red. So that's what I bought, and when I went to add grease to the hub, the old excess grease inside the buddy bearing cap was about the same dark red as the Mobil 1.

In the end, it probably doesn't matter what kind of grease I put in there as long as I keep it full.

The first trip with the new trailer went well. With more weight in the trailer and less in the car, having moved toolboxes and supplies from the hatch to the trailer's cargo box, I felt this trailer trying to push the back of the car around a little, which I never felt with the old Northern trailer. I had to crank up the front shocks to counteract a little bit of hobby-horsing too.

My marine grease is light brown.
