I am in the planning stage with respect to the 914. I have a list of things I would like to do and am currently looking to try to slot the car into SM2 if possible. So I am working through my list of “want to do” and seeing if they are legal within SM2. If particular changes are going go push me into Prepared or Modified territory, then I will most likely not do them vs. moving out of SM2.

This photo is of the seats and the upholstery “panel” that covers the back of the passenger compartment in a 914. This specific example is actually out of a right hand drive model, but you can see that the driver seat is adjustable (moves up/back on rails), but the passenger seat back is part of the entire back panel and is not adjustable. This was only in early 914s. Later models had moveable driver AND passenger seats. Mine has the adjustment for both.

The issue here is that I would like to remove the panel altogether. Mostly this is because when putting in a full cage, it may be difficult or impossible to put a cross brace in place as it would be right in the space where the panel would be. Also, due to the fact that the seat fits into a recess in the panel that is designed specifically for the stock seat, it may be difficult to get some seats to fit in the spot. A key thing for me is to find a seat that (a) fits me well (b) allows me to be low enough in the car that I am under the top of the roll hoop. Doing this may require moving the seat back as far as possible. If the new seat is different from the stock seat, it may not slide into the cutout in the panel.

SM/SM2 rules already allow me to swap in new driver and passenger seats. It also allows me to remove the rear seats (makes sense in SM, but not in SM2 as no rear seats in SM2). You also would get full update/backdate.

So questions are…

1. If you had an early 914 that didn’t have adjustable passenger seat. Could you remove the rear panel to allow passenger seat swap. Especially as the panel is part of the passenger seat.
2. If you can do that, then why can’t I just backdate my newer panels and passenger seat to the old style and then swap it out per Question #1

I guess if answers to #1 and #2 is “no”. I can try to write the SEB and propose a rule change that allows a similar allowance for SM2 (allow removal of upholstery directly behind seats) that is much like the SM allowance that for removal of rear seats.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.
