I just installed Marvin's Racing Beat intake on my car. (i WOULD HAVe also installed the exhaust, but Ryan is a bastard and beat me by 15 minutes  )

Here is the problem. After relocating the cruise and associated vacuum lines, I find that at redline the car shuts down. Tach goes to 0 and then it picks up again. I also get an occasional full throttle cough. Any suggestions? Bad Mass Airflow sensor? more intake than engine can take?

Just curious Rob...what class will you be headed to with your new intake?

No such thing as more intake than the engine can take

It could be a bad MAF, but I'm betting it's a slightly loose connection to the MAF. Snug that connector up a bit and try it again. It may also be a leak in the intake tract - check your connection at the crossover tube.

If you're changing classes, you might as well change over to an RX-7 MAF anyway. Your stocker doesn't even flow as much air as the 1.6 can take at high rpms. The MAF is physically larger, and the new intake may not fit correctly. See Ryan's car or Brad's car for some homemade RX-7 intakes.

Technically unless he increases the size of the TB he won't get more air in.

TB is not the choke point...

I looked at his setup last night. Definetely should flow more than the stock airbox. So Ryan, is this RB setup letting the TB run at its full potential?

The engine sounds good, no real stumbles or anything noticeable until he hits the rev limiter. The SOTP feel is quicker revs and acceleration. He fixed the vacuum hose that need to be replaced due to the swap. The MAF power cable just barely makes it to it but it is plugged in tight. The filter wasn't over oiled so it doesn't look like the MAF elements took a bath.

Not sure on Miatas. When I put one of these open breathers on my C4 I disconnected the battery and cleared the puter. Then let it relearn because I was affecting the air flow.

Other thing. Does the factory exhaust flow sufficiently to deal with the new intake or is it a serious choke point. If so, exhaust manifold, muffler, pipe diameter?

It's not the exhaust. I had RB intake on my 1.6L Miata with a stock exhaust with zero issues. I don't remember the MAF plug being stretched tight to connect it though. Can it be routed differently to fit better? - AB

If Rob is running the stock AFM, THAT is the REAL choke point. The stock AFM is only good for about 165 CFM, a stock motor can flow 178 CFM. Switching to the RX7 AFM is worth about 5 hp to most Miata's, it really livens up the topend.

The stock TB is good for about 300 CFM of flow, thats not a choke point for a good while.

As far as the factory exhaust flowing enough, probably not. I have a part of a left over exhaust that Rob is more than welcome to (Not the one you are getting Chris). Should bolt right up to the stock cat, it will also likely be loud as hell, but that really doesnt bother me 8)

All things AFM related can be found HERE. Its easy and pretty cheap to do ($50-$60). Its also easily reversable to run a stock class again, if Rob so wishes.

The wiring harness runs down the inner fender and is clipped right where it turns for the breather. So popping one clip would let some slack in it. It's tight. My only concern was engine vibration working it loose.

If the metal clip is still on the afm connector, it won't come loose. If it's gone, believe me, it will come loose. It will come loose coming out of the B!tch at VIR-S, to be exact...

And it could take four people over an our to find the problem!

BTW Tom, our duct tape fix is still holding up rather nicely. 8)
