so i have three of those 15qt flat things in the garage and they always seem to be full. not to mention nasty as hell. i take them to autozone or where ever to recycle and in the process there is oil all in the bed of my truck. the ford takes 15 qts. each time. and then there is draining the water out of the fuel filter. so i seem to be recycling all the damn time.

is there something else out there in which i could store my used oil that would be less of a mess and easier to take to the recycler?

i am thinking i may need some 5 gallon buckets and a hand truck. but then autozone might throw me out.

I put mine in orange juice jugs and have them picked up from my curb.

Town of Cary. I found a number on their website that you could call to have them pick it up. It's the same truck that picks up all of the other recycle items.

If you have a recycle service available, they may offer the same thing in whatever town you live.

I use the 5 gallon plastic gas can/jug. I have 2 of them. Once they fill up I just go over to the quick lube down the road. They don't mind at all. Then again I don't have a 15qt vehicle to change oil on... But I do have 4 vehicles worth of oil changes so those jugs do fill up fast enough...

Keep the top sealed and they don't stink up the garage or leak on the floor of the car when I take them to empty them.

I have a 20 Liter reagent container that I take to Auto Zone. I think they have a 5 gal limit per person for used oil but my local store does not check.

I have a 55 gallon drum in the corner of my garage. My next door neighbor drives an oil recycling truck and just comes and sucks it out when it is full. Bonus of the setup: my four-year-old son loves to see the big truck in the driveway and my neighbor lets him climb in the cab.

I save the plastic 5 quart containers the oil comes in and put the used oil back in them. I live out in the county (where you dispose of your own trash) and take those containers to the landfill. They have a large container to empty them into.

I use 5 gal paint buckets now - much easier than standard 5 gal buckets since they have that extra 3" screw top cap in the lid, which makes emptying MUCH neater.

Did you buy them or just get some from a scrap pile at job site (new home site)?

Do you reuse them or just replace them once they get full?

You can buy them at most paint supply stores (I've never seen them at Home Depot or Lowes though). With the screw off cap, you can continue to reuse them. I have 3 now that are all full... ;) - AB

We actually just finished repainting the "new to us" house, including respraying most of the ceilings, so got a couple that way. But I'm sure they can be had elsewhere.

There's also a couple of companies in Raleigh that will bring you a drum and periodically come by to empty it. I don't recall pricing now but I want to say it was pretty reasonable. I found them in the yellow pages but I don't recall what it was under. Recycling possibly?
