Anyone want to help build an E-mod MINI? An (over?) ambitious plan may be too much for only two hands and a small brain (I'm not very smart, but I can lift heavy things).

I'll provide beer & food, a heated shop with music (your choice maybe), annoying banter, free valet parking, indoor & outdoor bathrooms, etc.

If you're interested, I live in the middle of nowhere, Chatham County, almost into Siler City, but right off of US64. I work every night and both days on the weekend--my wife either loves or hates it, I'm not sure yet.

Let me know if you're interested--there might even be a CO-DRIVE available to the right person . . .

Thanks,

Joe

What sort of projects are involved? I mean, are we talking putting on some sway bars, or are we going to turn this into a tube-frame? What's really involved here?

Cheers,
Anders

Anders,

Somewhere in between the two, '07 is the tube-frame plan . . .

Right now the tub is stripped, I'm cutting out unnecessary brackets and studs, removing the undercoating and seam sealer. Some seam-welding and cage installation will be next (cage will be subcontracted).

Overall weight, front/rear distribution, cg, and polar moment are my primary issues, so the engine is moving rearward, the radiator will be in the rear; fuel cell, battery, etc. will all be located toward the center of the car . . ..

Engine mods will be relatively minor (some work has already been done), as will suspension redesign work (not that there won't be a lot of work on both, realistically). This is because my plan for '07 will include a different engine/drivetrain and wishbone suspension. This will make '06 a bit of a compromise in some places at times.

I have a pretty good plan, with details, but hopefully this is a fair overview.

Joe

How light do you think you can get it?

Sounds crazy fun, but I am too far away to help :(

Joe I am right in Pittsboro and after Tuesday I am on Winter break from college classes. What are your plans maybe I will come over there and help out some. Sounds like a fun project.

Keith,

You're more than welcome to come by, whether you want to work or not. I'm in Silk Hope, just up the road from PBO.

The above post covers the main ideas, right now it's mostly dirty (i.e., prep) work and seeing how/if my ideas will work.

I can start on drivetrain work very soon, I'm picking up an engine hoist this week. Everything is pulled off and I just have to yank it out and put it on the bench.

The rough idea is to finish the tub prep, take it to have the cage put in, and work on the engine/trans while that's away.

My home number is 742-5053.

Thanks,

Joe

Hey Ryan,

I hope to get it under 2000#.

I have a friend in Wilmington who makes surfboards and we hope to make door skins, hood, hatch, etc. all out of fiberglass or CF. He's does a lot of vacuum bagging so we'll see.

Otherwise it's a matter of time and money. I'll fab new parts as much as possible until both run out!

The iron block will keep the weight up, but I can't do anything about it right now.

I think this officially places me in the crazy/insane/irrational category, but it's only a matter of degree!!!!

Joe

E-Mod allows engine swaps, does it not? If you are going to a semi-tube frame, an engine swap should be easy. Remember the R5 Turbo?

I am really liking the idea of a mid-engine Cooper S
