I'm changing rotors and pads on the 95 miata...fronts went fine, rears went fine up until i get to part where the rotor is supposed to come off....it won't

i suspect it is just stuck due to 160k miles of abuse, but i want to be sure before i go hammering on it like a mad man...there's not retaining screws that i can see, i think it should come straight off...am i correct?

No retaining screw. Just take an M10 bolt and screw it into the threaded hole on the rotor. After you get that screwed far enough in, the rotor will pop right off. You can snag an M10 from the engine bay of the car (just remember to put it back when you're done 8) . )

that would have been an excellent idea had i thought of it...alas, a soak overnight in pb blaster and a good wack with a rubber mallet and they are off

IIRC the spare tire hold down eye bolt also works ... for some reason, that elegant piece of engineering wisdom always makes me smile.

Hey Frank,

I know you've probably already put the new rotors on, but when you have the car up on jackstands again, you may want to put a THIN coating of Never-Seez on the mating surfaces of the hub-rotor at all four corners. This will make future disassembly a snap.

Just be judicious in applying the stuff and wipe off any excess that squeezes out. Use the Aluminum or Copper-based stuff that is thick and pasty. Don't use anything that is even close to liquid consistency, or a grease, as these could eventually run up the rotors due to centrifugal force.

Chris,

If you bought new rotors, they may have not come with a tapped 10mm hole in them. If you haven't installed them yet, it would pay off to drill and tap them to facillitate future removal.

I looked at 'em, he has the tapped holes in the new rotors.

Hey Brad,

You're right about the anti-seize and I did use it when I swapped rotors. The car had previously spent time in Pa and Md and was originally sold with a hardtop so I suspect the OEM rotors had seen a few nasty winters.

Good advice though, even for NC.

Frank
