So... my clutch slipped a little while accelerating in 4th & 5th gear this morning. Only happened that one time, and it holds fine in 1st & 2nd. It had been doing great up until the incident this morning, which had led me to believe that it had unglazed itself after my mishap at the dragstrip.

Should I autox the RS this weekend, or just let it rest until after the new clutch is installed (hopefully next week)? What kind of bad stuff can happen other than not having enough clutch grip to drive home?

Kevin

Best case it slips and you have to bum a tow home.

Moderate (probably already happened anyhow) is that the flywheel is glazed quite badly and you will really want to remove it and have it resurfaced.

Worst case: You expose the rivits on the clutch disk and score the flywheel to the point that you need a new one.

Since you would need a flywheel, you naturally would get a lighter one and that means DSP. That means big fat sticky tires and a quad throttle body setup with a fully programmable ECU...

You can't afford the worst case...

Actually, I'm thinking about getting a lightweight flywheel and moving to DSP. And maybe replacing the cams when I do the timing belt, and going to SM.

FTPAX has been fun and all, but it'd be kinda nice to get some top 10 raw times...

Well, since you decided you were probably going to sell the WRX, I figured I'd just finish the year in mine. I thought I had emailed you about it...

Bring it on, sucker. I'll be back in DSP open next year. :)

I think we could have some fun... and I really, REALLY like going fast, so I'm thinking a set of R compounds would make me pretty happy.

Of course, this is all in the "thinking about it" stage right now - pretty likely that it'll remain in STS.

Well, it looks like either DSP or SM for the 2.5RS. I'm getting the clutch & lightweight flywheel installed on Friday, maybe some cams and various suspension pieces (that aren't DSP-legal) at a later date.

edit - no SM for me!

I've made up my mind, it's DSP open for me, too... I guess we'll find out how weak STS pax really was this year.

Now, a question about tires - Kumho Ecsta V700... 225/50/16... shave & heat cycle, or go with full tread, get them mounted, and go do circles in the Food Lion parking lot to heat cycle?

I'd get them full tread and do your own heat cycling and 'shaving'. If you've never been on race tires, you won't give up anything using full tread tires, and as long as you have the camber, you won't wear them quickly at all :) - AB

With the experience Les and I had with the Ecsta V700's this year, I actually would suggest having them shaved. The Ecsta can develop the "groove of death" full tread, and you'll end up loosing a lot of good wear from them

The old-style Victoracer V700 does not need to be shaved. They work great at full tread depth.

With the Escta's going away and being replaced with the V710's, I think I would stay away from them. My suggestion would be to go with the 710's, if they are out in the size you need them. Otherwise, go with VictoRacers. At least they are tried and true. Plus they will last you nearly the entire season.

Yeah, I had heard about the 710, but I just forgot about them. I won't be ordering tires before January or February, anyway, so I'll have plenty of time to decide what to get. I also heard about the groove of death, but was thinking it was specific to some model of car...

Yeah, I'm really not a fan of the Ecsta's, even after having my second pair shaved, they still developed the grove to some degree. If I buy any more race tires, it will be victoracers all the way. They might not grip quite as well, but are much more reliable.

So who are people usually getting their Azenis from? Discount tire? I don't think I've ever bought tires from anywhere other than the tire rack, and they don't carry them, so I don't know what to do with myself. :-)
