Ok, the new car does not have a working odometer and I really don't care. But I wanted to make sure I have everything I need to transfer the title.

I have the title and the previous owner and I filled out the back. But we didn't fill in the mileage that the odometer currently shows. If read this correctly....

http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_servic ... ister.html

It says "If the vehicle is less than 10 years old, you must supply an odometer statement signed by both the seller and the buyer". Car is over 30 years old. Current title lists nothing (blank) in the "odometer reading" and "odometer status" section on the front. So I think I am good to go but want to make sure. Basically it sounds like if the car is more than 10 years old, they don't care or need to know the mileage that is shown.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

I highly recommend doing the title transfer with the seller at the DMV itself. That way any and all potential questions are dealt with and you're 100% sure that everything is legal. And they're Notaries too.

That was my experience a few months ago. You may need to just put something in there to satisfy the DMV clerk but you won't need an odometer statement...

I can't emphsasize enough how wise this statement is. Wes is right on here. Don't forget to match the VIN number on the title with the VIN number on the actual car. If it doesn't match, you've purchased a car you don't own!

Sellers never treat me this way, but when ever I sell a car, I will write up a list of every known defect on the vehicle, and then I make the buyer sign it. If you meet at the DMV, he can sign it and you can keep a notarized copy for your records in case you get a complaint that you never told him ____ . I do it as a matter of conscience more than for legal reasons really.

I've done this for the last few cars I've sold. Even though your seller proably won't give you such a list, be sure to ask him to list everything and you can at least write down what he says.

My advice is worth every penny you paid for it. :)
