Does anyone know of a place where I can get a set of tires shaved? I am getting a set of tires soon and want to have them shaved. They are not coming from Tire Rack, so they can't do it for me before I get the tires. I have no idea where to go and any help would be appreciated.

Are they r-compounds? If not, I am not sure you will see any benefit from shaving them. It will probably just decrease the life of them. I could be wrong though...

No they're not R-compound. But I was talking to Mike Winn last weekend at the Triad Autocross. He had shaved Hankook RS2 that were shaved. Everything I have learned is that by shaving a tire to say about 4/32nds you will lose some life of the tire but you will also create a more even wearing tire. This is caused by lack of tread wiggle when the tire is new and you autocross it. I started this season with full tread BFG G-Force TA KD and they are almost shot already. The feathering that has resulted from the events is horrible. I am trying to prevent this partially with my next set of tires by getting them shaved.

Actually, shaving a tire in a lot of cases increases life, for it gets rid of tall tread blocks that will chunk, not only giving you tread squirm, but will rip away a lot of available rubber.

The best place to have a tire shaved is Vilven Tire in Royal, IL. They have no website, but give them a call at 800-251-0017. Ask to speak to Bob (Vilven). They shave tires so pretty, you'd think they molded them at that tread depth.

At $10 per tire to shave (compared to $25 per tire at Tire Rack), they will get my business for a long, long time. - AB

I can vouch for the shaving actually giving you more race tire life in some situations. At the 13 hour enduro at VIR last year, some folks tried to use full tread Toyo RA-1's in Spec Miata thinking they'd maybe do the race on one set of tires. Fortunately those folks had a backup set just in case, because they needed them at half way and wore both sets bald and almost didn't have enough tire.

Those of us who used shaved tires made it through the same race on just two sets of tire. We also had must faster lap times and didn't wear either set of tires out completely. Those that tried full treads basically overheated them and killed them prematurely.

What that has to do with autocross is left as an exercise to the reader. Said another way, I have no idea what it will mean for autocross. :)

Most places are weary of shipping to anywhere other than billing address, at least on ebay.

I just ordered a set of tires from the Tire Rack. I had them shipped to a different address from my billiing address. It wasn't a big deal...

The last set I bought from Tire Rack I had sent to Mark at HH&W. No problems at all. Since he is on their list of installers they have all the info and took care of it. Very easy transaction. Arrived to Mark in about 3 days.
