Ok, so I need to put the flywheel back on to my 13B rotary engine. I have several torque wrenches at my disposal...

-25 foot pounds
-75 foot pounds
-250 foot pounds

None of these are really up to the job of the spec: 360 foot pounds!

For those unfamiliar, this is a single nut that is about 2 1/8 inches in size. Wow. Is this a "resort to the air gun" situation?

Anders

We just use our Ingersoll/Sears impact wrench at a "medium" setting (done this on too many motors to count) so that you can take it off on "high". The airgun I use does 650 ft/lbs in reverse...I forget how much in forward. Alternately, you can make a "flywheel lock" with a piece of angle iron with two holes drilled for the pressure plate and with the engine on the ground, apply appropriate amount of weight with breaker bar/extension...you will need a helper to steady the motor.

Make sure you put thread lock on the threads and some silicone sealant per the manual. I hope you replaced the rear stationary gear o-ring while you were in there. Tends to leak (often mistaken for the rear main seal) and ruin clutches.

Darn. Anders is going to have his FD running again before mine. :(

--Ashraf (getting tired of dumping money into mine to make it "reliable" for track duty when it runs again)

You still have to lock the flywheel down with this:
http://www.racingbeat.com/resultset.asp ... mber=22001

when doing it manually which can be made as described in my previous post...

The 2 1/8" socket on a breaket bar works fine (and I think a better investment in tools since you can use the socket on an impact, too).

In fact...a breaker bar is sometimes the only way to crack open the bolt on the other end of the motor/eccentric shaft...that bolt has kicked the ass of the same over 650 ft-lbs of reverse torque impact wrench TWICE in the past few months only be overcome by body weight on a breaker bar. They put a ton of loctite on those fasteners!

I had one that wouldn't come off with 6-feet of extension on the breaker bar - it broke the breaker bar and we even torched it and subjected to just about any torture we could to get it off to no avail. The motor was never opened, ended up being sent back as a core. :(

Thanks goodness for the Craftsman guarantee replacing my breaker bar. :)

If you have the cake, the products here seem to be able to get just about any torque job done.

I've got plenty of angle sitting around, so I'll make up one of those. I've got a 400 forward 650 reverse gun as well...

So, do any of the Spec RX7 guys have torque wrenches for this, or do they go with the "stand on the bar" method?

Anders

BWAHAHA. They run a $3000 race car. Do you think they actually spend money on tools???

Nah, I don't know anyone that uses a torque wrench. Darn Rich for pointing out that wrench. Now I must have one!
