After 8 years of street use and who knows how many track events
one of my Carrera shocks went bad on the Corvette.

Long story short: Carrera (now QA1) has 12 regional service centers
closest being Tenn. Rebult/revalve/dyno test fee is $42 per shock
dyno test only fee $10.00. They are promicing a 10 day turn around.

Not bad considering the cost for the same for Koni/Bieldstein was almost
the same as a new shock.

Contact is:

PPM Racing PRoducts
201 South Wilder Ave
Rockwood, TN 37854

865 354 9669 ask for "Randy" (will issue a SR number)

Mark, I think that Bilstein is ~$55 per unit. Konis are $125+, IIRC.

The last quote I got from the guy at Bilstein who rebuilds them was roughly $55-60. Then add shipping. And I beleive he is in CA so shipping isn't cheap. I ended up going through VBP and getting new Bilstein Sports (Z51 suspension) for $75/ea.

Since the Sport version was just what I wanted it made more sense to just get brand new ones. But if you send them off you can get customized valving instead of off-the-shelf valving.

PS: Mark I still have the original Bilsteins at the house. If you want them they're yours. You could get them revalved to whatever you need.

Graham

I sold a set of struts on ebay and shipped them to LA for under thirty bucks. FedEx Ground rocks.

The main Bilstein USA office is in San Diego, however, I think that revalving and rebuilding can be handled by the motorsports facility in Mooresville, NC. Of course, then you pay sales tax, so it might be six of one, half-a-dozen of another.

Thanks Graham, but the Covette was long ago converted to coil over. Putting stock dampers back on is not really an option. I have #6348's which are a single adjustable threaded alloy body shocks with spericial bearings. They were salvaged from the '92 Michael Bird track car I purchased. Carrera had sort of a questionable rep because they started out selling cheep re-valved OEM type shocks and just re-painted them
but their race stuff is good and they made all their own stuff (or at least
until they got purchased by QA1).

I paid $65.00 Plus postage to have a set of Bieldstin re-bult/re-valved which was the same as I purchased them at AutoSport Gallery. I had to do this when I put the big springs in the back of the FORD. Same with
the struts on the Scirocco I was quoted $65 just to test them.

I am a big fan of Bielstein and I use them on the Scirocco but when it comes to re-valving you are on your own. At least with Koni or
Carrera (QA1) and others, you can talk to a shock engineer and get
some support. There used to be a company that did custom valving
for Bielstein as well as adjustable conversions but they are no longer
in business.

That company was Shocktek.

I have yet to do it, but I have talked to Bilstein many times and had no problem getting tech on a rebuild. Yes, you have to push your way past their customer service personnel, but they have a number of tech guys who will take the time to talk to you about your options. I don't think they have a neat rebuild sheet like TrueChoice, but I did not get the impression that I was on my own. YMMV.

BTW, Mark, I didn't know there was a $65 Bilstein! Certainly does put a different light on the rebuild cost.

QA1's back on the Corvette this week. It took 2 weeks from they day I shipped, got some good advise on valving, and the bill was $85 for the pair. (both re-valved & dyno tested)

I could tell the difference just backing over the seams on my drive way.
Got an Apt with M&M for an alignment on Wed and we will be ready for
ROckingham!
