Recently, I failed a tech inspection because of what was assumed to be a bad camber plate. After spending more time with it, we found that the play was actually in the strut shaft, where it goes into the strut body.

I called the place I ordered them from and was told that this much play was normal. Which I find hard to believe. I will be calling Koni on Monday morning to discuss. In the meantime, any thoughts on this?

All of the nuts are tightened properly. The play is internal to the strut insert.

Your situation sounds a little diffrent, but when I had the WRX with Koni inserts I had a similar problem. In my case I had cut the donor OEM strut body too short, so the dimples on the Koni insert were not in contact with the OEM strut body housing. This caused play between insert and donor strut. Again it sounds different than yours assuming your sure none of the insert dimples are above top of donor strut.

I ended up having to buy a set of take off struts to recut :(

Just checked, the little dimples are pushed down into the oem housings, and the nut on the bottom that holds the insert in is still tight.
