Post subject: Is transmission oil the same as differential oil?

I see that Redline does make an oil specifically for diffs but would MT90 work too? They are both 75w-90 rated but I think the diff oil has addatives for limited slip diffs. That won't help the viscous diff in my car because it is a sealed unit.

So what's the consensus? Thanks!

It depends.

How is that for ambigueity?

On some cars its the same, some use ATF as manual tranny fluid. Check the weight and specs the fliuds in question must meet.

Redline is good stuff. I use their 75w90NS and 75w90 gear oil. You should email or call them for your specific application. Their tech guy Dave G. is real helpfull.

Don't mean to bring up an old post, but does anyone know of a local shop that sells Redline Tranny fluid?

Wanted to pick some up local if I could. The site has a few of the standards listed, but they don't apparently carry transmission fluid (at least according to Redline's website).

Thanks all. :D

I have found these products superior to Redline.

I believe that T-Hoff also carries Redline products.

Rich,

On what do you base your conclusion that the Specialty Formulations products are superior to Redline (or any other "major brand" synthetic for that matter)? I'm not even sure that Redline is better than (or as good as) other synthetics but at least they have a track record (literally). :D

Hmm, my wording was bad. I have found that the Specialty Products MTL-P works significantly better than Redline MTL or D4-ATF in my MTX-75 transaxle. Shifts smoother hot or cold. Shifting without clutch (up and down) is much easier. YMMV.

I have been a long supporter of Redline and would use them without hesitation, but so far, SF MTL-P has proven superior in my use.

Carolina Mustang does carry it; Advance Auto only carries the motor oils and Water Wetter.

And as I found out last week, Pepe Boys does NOT carry RL oil any more.

I did get 2 quarts of MT-90 from Mark C @ HHW. We should all be calling him asking if he sells RL, eventually he'll get the hint and keep some in stock :)

I wish he'd keep ATE brake fluid in stock too :)

It's nice living in race country here in Charlotte. I can get a gallon Redline 75w90 gear oil for $22. Nothing better than not having to pull the siphon from one quart to the next. - AB

Where did you get it down here? I have a week to go, so I might as well put it to use.

By the way, Redline does not guarantee that your transmission will stay in one piece :) I wonder if it cleans up easier from concrete.
