It's almost time to start buying the PVC Armstrong tiles to do my garage, but I'm having trouble deciding what colors or design to do!

Help me decide :) Here are the options I have thought of. What would you do or not do, and why?

Before we begin - I'd like to stick with fairly normal colors; There is a strong plus for the light tan color as it is something like $0.10 cheaper per tile - I think it's the standard color.

1. Uniform grey
2. Uniform tan

Comments: Uniform colors will show the seams between tiles eventually, especially at spills. That is one great reason to go checkerboard.

3. Checkerboard black and white

Comments: Ugh! Sure it looks neat but I think I would go blind from the contrast. The white will look dirty instantly. I imagine it would be "hard" to see parts on the floor with the sharp contrast.

4. Checkerboard light and dark tan

Comments: My favorite pick right now, but it is a little boring :)

5. Centered blue and white checkerboard in the middle of the four "bays" surrounded by uniform tan or grey

Comments: Blue and white - I can't resist :)

So, any comments or ideas? Can someone design a web-based java application that allows me to try out different color combos? :)

I think in true No Gum fashion, it should be checkerboard, but in two shades of brown 8) - AB

Edit. Nevermind. I found the original thread discussing this from a few months ago.

Ask and you shall receive: http://www.geom.uiuc.edu/java/Kali/

:D

Seriously I've been in a few shops with the traditional hot rodder black/white checkerboard and it's annoying. If you want to do a pattern I'd highly reccomend something light rather than super high contrast. It makes it easier to find dropped small parts.

If you want to do the two color to hide the dirt in the seams, I would see if you can get two slightly different shades of the same color and then do a checkerboard. But go with lighter colors in general so you can see stuff on the floor in low light conditions.

If it was me, I might do a grey and a light grey.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Mike,

Depends on whether "function" is more important than "decorating".

A solid fairly light color will make the whole garage, including the underside of the car, have better visibility IMHO. I suspect that a lighter color will make it easier to spot dropped nuts, bolts, etc.

I have a light tan stain on my shop floor and it "works" well. Team Highball had light gray epoxy as I recall and it also seemed to work well the little bit that I "used" it while working on my car.

Red and Green. So its Christmasy.

I like the two shades of brown or tan personally. Although Xmas-spec flooring would be much funnier.

Put it all down on 4x8 sheets of plywood, so you can have "theme" floors like Karl suggest. Swap in the new flooring depending upon the time of the year and mood.

In the near term, I vote for dark brown and medium brown, in an oil spill camo pattern. I can provide a sample of used Mobil 1 from my Mustang for you to show to your decorator.

However, a few years out you will have to redo it in more cheerful colors, since your children will take it over as their rainy day playroom.

Will you have coordinated window treatments to match?

Lou

And we call Karl Martha?

I have no suggestions on color. My garage floor is a boring concrete color. It works for me.

Only if you'll make them for me, Louise.

I like Art's suggestion. To save you lots of work I'll bring over the diesel truck that holds something like 87 gallons of oil. You provide the broom and we can have the floor done in an hour!

If Karl brings his over we can also do the driveway!

Ron
Always willing to help!
