Thinking at next year there is some changes I like to do on the Porsche that my might push me out of SSM.
Reading the rules book for prepared category. I think I can go to A/P. My car is listed in F/P with a weight of 2250 lbs.
In A/P, after the car listing, there is a general rules for car, being under 5.1L allow me 2000 lbs. The car is currently around 2150 lbs
allowing me to put it on a diet to gain these 150 lbs. One of the thing that I got in mind is plastic windows. Even if SSM allow me 1900 lbs I don't
think that plastic windows are allowed in SSM. Do all the rules book savvy one are reading the rules book the same way I'm reading it.
If yes, I might be running in A/P next year.

Patrice

Patrice,

The "plastic" windows are a no-no in SSM. Sorry :(

This statement is not at all related to the legality of your question. But...

In rally, where window material subsititution is common, "plastic" (like clear plexiglass) is not allowed. The reason for this is pretty straightforward: when plexi breaks, it does so in spear-like knife shape pieces.

So, all of the replacements have to be polycarbonate (that is, Lexan brand or equivilant). Polycarbonate doesn't break into points like plexiclass, and it's ridiculously strong. Take a hammer to some sometime... I have! It's fun! You can get it at various glass stores and plastic supply houses pretty easily. It's not super expensive.

Just something you might want to look into.

Cheers,
Anders

It's quite possible that you don't need the windows at all in prepared class. Regardless, they are legal in prepared and mod.

Patrice,

I can't help with the rules question.

However, are you aware that the Solo Events Board is apparently looking at major changes to AP due to poor participation numbers? It might not be the right time to prepare a car to the current AP rules unless you can easily reverse the changes.

I don't know if the current proposals to other Prepared classes would impact your plans. That stuff is much too complicated to keep track of for me.

The windows that I'm looking at are poly... and are specially cut or form to fit my car. I still want to have window that I can close everything when it rain. The real question is: can I put my car in A/P? I would like to avoid going in E/M.

Patrice,
I have installed poly windshields in a couple of road racing Porshes. One of them ran PCA track events but the other ran SCCA. They were legal when I put them in 2 years ago. They are a bit difficult to rope in because of how much they flex. They also scratch easily.

You probably should get a hold of the current Production Class or GT Class rule book that would cover your car for road racing. If I remember correctly your car would road race in GT 2 class.

Do your doors have a metal frame all the way around the windows? If not the Lexan windows will require some sort of bracing to keep from being sucked out at speed which would make them inoperable. Even with the hardcoat you'll be replacing them regularly if you roll them up and down due to scratching. Drag racers who do this (my brother is putting them in his Omega this winter) cut the weatherstripping back on the door so it doesn't rub on the plastic, but they don't run in the rain.

I've seen plastic back windows of Porsches sucked right off the body at speed several times at ALMS events. The Suction on the back glass on a Poorsh is quite great at high speeds evidently. Most of the teams install two metal straps over the outside of the window to help keep it attached.

I can see it now, Patrice starts his run at Laurinburg, and when he reaches 90mph, on what is for the rest of us only a 60 mph course, all the glass is just sucked right off of the car!
