I'm looking into getting a rev based shift light for the bling machine. Basically, I'm getting sick of staring at the tach running down a ProSolo straight, in order to figure out where to shift. Now that I will have the new ECU today(thank you FedEx Man), I've decided to start looking at these.

One I was interested in was Rev-Lite brand, but after doing some searching, it was discontinued, for the company in Australia went out of business. Those on Honda-tech said it rules..

Does anyone know of any others that are sub $150 (don't want a big ugly tach), and can work that a car that will rev past 8500? Thanks - AB

Just go to:

http://www.autometer.com

Enter the site and monkey around until you get a top pane nav bar. Click Products and then click Accessories and one of the items will be shift lights. I think I have the 5331 in my Spec Miata, but they have a ton of them. You buy the little plug in modules separately to set the RPMs you want it to come on at.

Be warned...one thing I've noticed with shift lights is that where you want it to come on for lower gears isn't optimal for higher gears. Since you rev out first and second a whole lot faster than fourth, fifth (or in your case, sixth), you want to set it to come on a little "early" for those lower gears and then you have to train yourself to wait some in the higher gears. This is advice for those using one for road race, I guess, because Aaron won't care past third for sure, and usually just second.

Maybe you should go ahead and get a oil pressure warning light too. boost gauge, volt meter, and a/f ratio guage. Remember to mount two on the pillar next to you, and two across on the passenger side. That way you can be a real ricer.

I ended up calling Autometer and talking with them. They were quite helpful in determining the model I should get. I ended up buying a 5340, so that way I need not have a rpm activated box in line as well. Pills go right in at the base of the light. I also bought a 7600-8400 pill set. 8400 will be the only one I'll use though, which should give us a 1/4 second to shift prior to revving out. ;) - AB

Probably too late now since you've ordered the tach, but a "memory tach" which can store and replay runs can be very helpful both between runs and to analyze runs later.

No worries here... I actually just want a shift light. My tach is pretty much useless to me as long as something tells me 'SHIFT' other than hearing the rev limiter :) Memory Tachs are cool though. - AB

Aaron,

Interestingly (maybe) the only shift light that I had room for that didn't block vision for my formula car was too small/weak to see most of the time. Conversely, the big tach positioned so redline is straight up and just under normal line of sight is just fine . . . of course it does help to have very close ratio gears and a non peaky motor. :D

Methinks Dick hasn't seen any of these Autometer lights. They are a small light cannon. If it is in your field of view at *all*, you know it just came on. In fact, you *want* it just at the edge of your field of view...otherwise it may blind you. :-)

I didn't believe it until I tried it, but you know the thing is on. Oh, don't lose the cap for it...you'll want that on if you need to drive the car at night and plan to rev till the light comes on. You'll see the light through the cap just fine at night...

Some say for road racing you shouldn't ever *need* it if you're aware of what's going on. Those folks have obviously never been in the middle of a pack of 60 other equally prepared cars going into turn one after the green flag. ;-) Your shift points for *that* straight and turn won't be the same as every other lap you've practiced and your adrenaline will be pumping. Combine that with the fact that with so many cars around you it is really hard to tell your engine noise from everyone else's and it's very easy to simply forget to shift until you hit limiter a couple times. By the time that happens you're getting passed by six cars or more.

I could see how Aaron would have similar issues in a ProSolo, too...often there can be a subtle bend in the first "straight" and you've been concentrating on the tree and the car beside you is distracting you and ... oh, all that and Aaron just isn't smart enough to know when to shift without an idiot light. ;-)

Aaron (and other folks, since he's already ordered), I got this one:

I paid about $120. The actual RPM I never turn on unless I'm doing some
kind of diagnostic work. It's software, no pills, so it's infinitely* adjustable
for RPM and number of cylinders. I think it does 1 to 12 cylinders. Plenty
bright (I got blue), definitely keep the cap for night.

I have found it to be very useful. Plenty of times where I'm busy
evaluating the road and don't want to take my eyes off it, and
suddenly it just "reminds me", so I shift.

Also has a max RPM recall. I dig it.

Anders

*infinitely in this case meaning "increments of 10 rpm" and "up to
13,000 RPM"

Hi Donnie,

I wasn't clear. Ive seen the Autometer lights and fully agree that they would do the job. Literally no place in my car to put one unless I put it above the front roll hoop and then it would block my whole view of the course (and blind me)! :D The tiny light used that was not in the way, and was powered by my recording tach, was too whimpy to do any good.

I agree that a shift light is a valuable tool . . . just not that relevant to my particular situation given the tradeoffs.
