Unfortunately, the motor on our MR2 Spyder blew up at Nationals thanks to a missed shift during the Pro Solo Finale.

Anyway, we've got a new used motor in the car and want to dyno it side-by-side with Sean Meinhart's Spyder. We don't need anything fancy as we're not doing any tuning. If it looks like the motor is not up to snuff then we'll sell the car and get another one. It's too expensive to stick another motor in it.

A quick Google search found four in the area:

Mayhem Motorsports in Raleigh (looks like they specialize in GM stuff)

RPM Motorsports in Garner (another GM oriented place)

Phatasm Tuning on Capital Blvd. in Raleigh (Looks to be more import-oriented)

Absolute Automotive in Durham off of Page Rd. Ext. (more European oriented)

It probably doesn't matter what they normally work on as we just need basic dyno runs from a decent shop. If anyone has strong recommendations and/or warnings for any of the shops it would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the help!

Eric Peterson

I think Bimmer Performance Center still has a Dyno. They took over LRRs space. Haven't used them, but likely worth a call.

Stay away from Phantasm. I am surprised they have a dyno. They mostly cater to the shiny rims and a big wing crowd.

I have been by the BPC shop since LRR left. Nice group of guys. I have not had any work done by them.

The Mayhem guys are known for their "special" tuning they do on GM cars. This is just hearsay: From what I understand, they have a way to flash most GM ECUs and have them pass state OBD2 inspection, regardless of what equipment is actually installed in the car. People trust them with their new Corvettes, so you can probably trust them with your MR2?

Can confirm, BPC has a dyno and are super nice. Not sure what the pricing is for rental time. Also 2wd only. I had my car dyno'd last year as part of their October get together....$40 for two pulls.

I've had work done at RPM before, great guys, last I heard they do offer a price to just throw a car on the dyno. I'm not sure how open they are to non-gm stuff but i'd guess they don't care assuming they aren't so busy that the dyno is in use all the time for customer cars.

I'll also add, they used the pretty accepted smoothing and SAE values for their graphs, so they never tried to do any of that fluffing of the numbers or anything.

RPM does the same thing, it's pretty much industry standard far as I know. You can do the same thing with a mail order tune.

I used to drive a 2010 Camaro SS with longtubes and high flow cats. I had them tune it and they can just turn off the rear O2 sensors so they register a N/A on the OBDII scan.

The state could obviously see the difference if they compared the readiness codes of a stock and non-stock GM car but I assume they don't care. I took it to a quick in and out inspection station and passed without any questions. Without the tune the rear O2 sensors would detect that the high flow cats clearly don't do anything and tripped a CEL.

We've done some dyno pulls on our chumpcar at J Mills Tuning up on Franklinton. Good guy, competent, reasonable prices. He has a good reputation with the Honda crowd but I bet he'd take your money :)

In the past, I've used Carolina Auto Masters. They used to be downtown Durham, but moved to Burlington.

Jeff is awesome. He let me sit in the car and do whatever I needed to do when I brought my Miata there to do some tuning. If you're willing to drive out to Burlington I definitely recommend him. His dyno's numbers were within a hp of the mobile one that shows up to NASA events to boot.

We used Bimmer Performance Center in Raleigh as it was between Sean and I, so it was convenient for both of us to benchmark our cars. In short, they were great and I recommend them.
