Since part of my retirement plans are to visit some of the nicer tracks in the US, I decided I needed to mod the mustang just one more time. I went with a gt500 hood vent for this go 'round. I bought a used hood, bright red of course and a new gt500 vent. Took my time and measured more than I care to think. Got the vent centered where it was minimal for water dripping and venting heat from the radiator.

First step was to zero in on the location, so here it is taped off and set up to cut.... I was holding my breath when I broke out the angle grinder. Had to use a drill and dremel for the tight areas.

finally after clean trimming, smoothing and notching of both the hood and the vent, it finally snapped into place.

Now it's time to prep for paint and some sort of black out center style. Not sure what I want to do yet design wise...

Always makes me nervous when you have to cut one thing to install another.
You said it just snaps in place? No rivets, no adhesive?
Most of the Miata vent options seem to be rivet-in.

When I installed the hood vents in our old Prelude race car, I used a jig-saw. It doesn't create nearly as much heat as angle grinder, which can cause warpage. I found it to be pretty precise as well.

Looks like yours turned out well though. I might even consider doing it to mine.

It has a grove on the front edge that slips over the metal part of the hood, I had to trim that grove to miss the structural parts I had to cut out. That said, there's still plenty of structure left under the hood. The vent itself is very rigid, so I'm adding some structure back to the hood. I think I will add some pins on the front of the hood, but that remains to be seen after some test drives. The back of the vent has some spring clips and a metal post to hold the back in. I will add adhesive to the entire underside once it gets installed for the final fitment.

Yeah, I was trying to figure out the best way to cut it. I did a lot of lifting of the grinder to keep the heat down. It did allow me to make a nice line on the straight parts, the corners, not so much. Lot of finish sanding there. Should have used a jig saw on those corners, but it all cleaned up well with a flap sander bit on the drill.

I don't see where adding a functioning vent to the hood is a "rice" quality mod. Now, if I were to add the fake fender vents, then I'd agree with you!

Need some help please. I ran out of base paint for the hood, I knew I was cutting it close, but didn't quite make it. NAPA is closed today and on Sundays where I picked up the paint the last time. Does anyone know of a place where I can get some paint mixed tomorrow?
