Have a neighbor with a Bronco with a 5.8l V8 in it that he wants to pull out to have rebuilt. Looking for some recommendations of a rebuilder / machine shop in the area who can help him decide what to do (performance options) and do the work.

Any recommendations? I passed on to him the only places I know of (CHS, T-hoff, and CarQuest) but I don't really know who has experience with the Ford motors...

Boyette's

Old school shop. Lots of neat machinery you can see through the storefront window. They are within walking distance to lots of places to eat/drink downtown, so it can be worth a trip even if you don't use them.
They have a relationship with T-Hoff. They refuse pretty much all 4cyl/foreign engine work and send it to T-Hoff.

Unless he just wants to rebuild that particular engine, it's ALOT cheaper and usually easier to just buy a rebuilt engine when it comes to common stuff. As I'm sure you know, rebuilding an engine, even on the cheap, is never cheap.

I'm sure there are plenty of sources, but I've seen crate engines at Summit, rebuilt longblocks or shortblocks from Jasper, even Autozone etc.

Machine shop costs add up very quickly. So unless you just really need it to be a numbers matching car/truck or just have some desire to build something unique I would agree with going the reman or crate motor route.

unless that's the original engine and want to stay numbers matching, I say go w/ a crate motor that has a warranty.

That combined with the downtime is next to nothing. Buy, install and drive. It's what makes "Murica great. - AB
