I'm in search of some lubrication engineers gear oil for the 525. It's a bit noisy and Dave recommended buying this for the car. I'm not finding a good source on line to buy it and amazon has failed me for the first time. Anyone have any insight on where I can buy some LE 75x90 gear oil?

It has been years since I bought any LE. I had it in my 510 and the shop that rebuilt the transmission found it was hard to believe it was the transmission they test drove before I pulled it out to rebuild. The place I bought my LE from has been out of business for decades.

Closest I could find, not even sure they make a 75-90.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lubrication-Eng ... 1855935190

EDIT: they do make a 75W-90, called Monolec 9919 (or Synolec 9919).

Seems to be sold in 5 gallon pails only, this place sells 9920 (75W140) in quart bottles-

FWIW, I know a guy who'd sell you a whole new diff pretty cheap if it comes to that.

Thanks Bret! If I can't get this to quiet down some, I may be calling you about a replacement diff....

My personal opinion is that generally speaking a noisy transmission or differential that is making non-normal noise is down to mechanical issues and that a lubricant swap is not going really impact much if at all. And that boutique lubricants are about solving usability issues (shift quality, LSD plate slip feel, etc.) and maybe duty life/preventing future issues and not about fixing current ones. YMMV.

OK, found it. Seems that Tom Bishop that runs auto sport gallery has it in stock. I think he runs his store out of his house now, so his hours are very truncated. That said, he has it and can ship.

@ Richard. Dave Davis and seen the issue I have w/ my diff before and this is his recommendation to get it to quiet down. States this is a regular fix for MB cars. This is cheaper and easier than a diff swap/fix, so I'm going the easy route first. I'll report back any updates and if this helped or not.

I did come across this video if you're interested. Stuff seems pretty sticky....

The diff in the jeep is crazy noisy, normally i'd replace it, but the previous owner said it's been that way since 2001 when he bought it. He was a former co worker so I know he's telling the truth. I figure i'll just drive it. I'll probably change the fluid and find that the gears were just never setup right from the beginning, in which case it's just going to be noisy but probably not break. The thing already has 165k miles on it anyway.

Circling back around on this. I'm in need of 2 more qts of LE gear oil. I've tried to contact Tom, but I think he's shut his business down, no reply to emails for the last 2 days. I've also contacted LE directly. The girl I'm dealing with via email is a little shy of a full deck of cards, hard to get a straight answer out of her. Seems the smallest quantity I can buy direct is a 5 gallon bucket, and I don't need that.

I've looked on line and it's damn near impossible to find a reseller. I'm looking for the 704 monolec gear oil. If you know of ANY way to purchase, please let me know....

Rodney,

I checked where I normally get LE products at Speedway motors but the only thing I found was the straight 90W.
http://www.speedwaymotors.com/Lubricati ... 29645.html

I think the best option is to go directly to LE.

I just put in 3.5 qts of the LE 7500 Monolec in my 97 Cobra and it shifts like brand new.

I've already gone the Speedway and LE direct line support. LE sells the 80w90 in qts, but not the 80w140, 5 gallon is the smallest they sell. I've actually contacted a person at LE and they said they'd "try" to find some for me. Much putting much stock in it...

Buy 5 gallon bucket.
Use what you need.
Put remainder in quart bottles.

Sell to others having the same problem you are.

$196.35 plus shipping on 5 gallons.... no thank you...

unless I could find 3-4 folks to go in with me on a purchase, then I'd pull the trigger

I don't know Rodney. I kind of like Benjamin's idea. This is at least your second round on sourcing this stuff. Two quarts here, two quarts there, soon you are talking five gallons! You are talking about a boutique lubricant. It's gonna be hard to find and cost more.

Is this stuff really that great? Seems like a lot of work for diff lube. I don't think i've ever heard of a fluid magically making a noisy diff quieter.

The cherokee I had was quite noisy and according to the former owner had been that way since 2001. I changed the oil in it for good measure and then learned to ignore it, I figured if it blew up i'd just find a junkyard axle and toss in. That might be a bit more difficult on a 525 though.
