I just bought some old rims and am trying to order tires. How do you measure rim width? From the outside to outside they're 7", but inside to inside edge its 6". Are these 6" or a 7" rims?

Thanks!

It should actually be stamped on the back of the wheel so you don't have to measure.

Look for something like this on a spoke or somewhere on the back side.

Most are stamped like Chad said.

BUT, width is measured from inside lip to inside lip, where the tire bead would contact the wheel.

Sounds like you have 6" wide wheels.

The wheel vs. rim debate is much like Trekkie vs. Trekker from a sociological perspective, an attempt to control and differentiate one's tribal boundaries. As an engineer I only care about accurately describing what is being measured:

Definition #4:

http://www.dictionary.com/browse/rim?s=t

If you're being pedantic this thread makes no sense since the definition you posted defines the place that the bead contacts.
