Hey, guys!
I took a break from autocross, but it looks like I'll get back into it now that I've had this new job for a while and my finances have stabilized.

Anyway, since I've been out of the loop on autocross and tires for a while, I thought I ask y'alls opinions.

I'm interested in tires for my 1992 240SX.
It's running with full interior, AC, and CD player, and probably weighs 2800lbs or more.

Does Street Touring require a Treadwear rating of 200+ again?
I need them to still have grip in the rain, and if the pavement is kinda cold.
And I'd rather it didn't pitch me off the track with no warning, like my Azenis' used to do with my 1996 240SX.
I'm hoping for a tire with good feedback and a little bit of noise before they let go.

So, what are the good tires for my class?

Daniel, welcome back. Look at this thread that was just started... viewtopic.php?f=22&t=15082 It lists some of the better autox tires to run on right now. All should be 200 tread wear.

Thanks, Rodney! That other thread gives me a bunch more questions...

From that thread it looks like the Falken Azenis is still bad-@$$.
And not short-lived like it used to be?

How are the RT-615s about warning you before you exceed the grip?

(On that red 240SX I used to have, I distinctly remember the Azenis 215 let go with no warning.
Every tire I've had since then has made some squealing sound before letting go.)

I see that Tire Rack test didn't include the Dunlop Direzza StarSpec, the Toyo Proxes R1R.

Has anyone around here tried the Toyos? Any chance they're worth the money?

Any word on the Nitto NT05?

Has anyone bothered with the Yokohama Advan Sport V105?

What's the difference between the Rival and the Rival S?
I see the BFG G-Force Rival is on sale at the TireRack.
And it's traction rating is "AA" instead of just "A". Does that mean it's supposed to have good wet traction?

I've heard the NT05's don't really heat up quick enough for autocross.

I think the Toyos aren't 200 treadwear, so they wouldn't be legal.

If you're looking for wet traction for street driving, most of the good autocross tires will be quite prone to hydroplaning, so that may not be a good choice if you're daily driving on them. Unless of course you're willing to deal with possible hydroplaning, just don't drive too fast through puddles, lol.

As far as the Rival and Rival S go, the Rival S is the newer softer stickier tire, they're supposed to be really fast. The RE-71R and Rival S are probably the fastest autox tires out there currently, of course you'll sacrifice some tread life with the sticker tires.

ZII Star Specs have always been good, I have them on my Miata, but the RE-71R and Rival S are faster now days.

If you're at a more street summer tire like the V105, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport would probably do much better, although they're probably more expensive too.

Yes, they are:

Indeed, since I'm 3 years out of practice, I might not need the absolute stickiest tire out there.

...And I remember having some tire on my Evo that sucked at a wet autocross, and I whatever I bought for the replacement was fine on wet pavement.

So, I'm sure there's something out there that will serve my purposes, even if I end up going to Treadwear 260 or something, for now

I'm trying to absorb all the tire info I can find, and now realize the old issue of GRM in my bathroom ONLY has obsolete tires that are out of production.

Well, I'm getting back into autocross, but I'm now up in Virginia because of the job.

...But I did notice the Tidewater Sports Car Club has scheduled an event at NCCAR this year.
April 23rd & 24th.
Maybe I'll see some of y'all there? :)

We're at NCCAR twice this year, Danville, as well as an event scheduled at VMP, so we should DEFINITELY see you at some of our events.

I think I'll add my other question to this thread...

I'm thinking about getting some 17x7.5 round metal things to mount my tires on.
This is partly driven by the small selection of tires for 15" and 16" rims.

Whatever I get is going to see a lot of daily driving use, with some track and autocross time. Is there any particular kind you'd recommend?
The Tire Rack has a Kosei K1 TS that has the weight I'm looking for, but they only have it in a 7" width...
Choices of offset are 36mm and 42mm. How do I know which offset I want?

I'm looking for input on quality, durability, and so on.
Does anyone in the club have any experience with these wheels?

Rota SubZero - The choices of offset are 45mm and 48mm. Either one sounds like a lot. How do I know if they'll fit?

Rims? :stick:

Unless we are talking about 26's with spinners, the correct terminology among car enthusiasts is "wheels".

LOL.... I can so relate to this. Can't tell you how many people I've "corrected" for using the term "rim" out of context. Drives me nuts when they use that term on some of the car shows I watch.

NT05's I doubt will heat up fast enough for AX. Even the NT-01's I had were not ultimate grip. They are good track tires though. I also don't think the Azenis are really the tire of choice, look at what the others say about the latest tires

What kind of car are you putting the rimz on? That'll help determine which offset will work best.

Puttin' 'em on my 4-lug S-car, yo. :)

...My 1992 240SX that I think is now in "Street Touring Sport".
I was hosed bad enough in "Street Touring Compact"...
