Thats a miata problem in general from what I have read/experienced. Mine does that (99 6spd). Something about one of the inner shift boots getting worn out and making it hard to pull into the gear slot from what I have read on miata.net.

I have had the same issue on my Miata NA with NA transmission. The inner boot goes bad and the shift turret dries out making it difficult to shift. The time before last I refilled it and replaced with a good boot only to have it go dry again (failed to go into 5th gear). It doesn't appear to be leaking out anywhere and I suspect whatever sealing mechanism there is between the shift turret and the gear box has worn allowing the fluid to leak from the turret, past the shift rods into the gear box. Yet another reason the car is parked

Cant speak much for the 5 speed or NA. I know my 6 speed has no fluid and the inner shift boot causes the same problem.

Is this inner shift boot replaceable on a NB 5 speed? Mine is out currently, and the top shifter to body boot was toast, but if this inner boot can be replaced with the transmission out it sounds like it might be worth my while.

Yes, the turret and shifter are a little different on the NB's but still similar. Last time I purchased both boots they were about $20 each online. Mazda comp or mazda motorsports (whatever they call it now) is worth joining if you haven't yet.

Yep, I have, I already have a cart full of stuff for the motor that's going in also.

I'll take a closer look at the transmission next time i'm at Austin house since that's where the Miata is living currently taking up half his garage lol.

To be honest, you can replace both boots in the car.

I'll have to check my inner boot at some point although I did rebuild the gear shifter only 6 months ago.

They don't last super long. The one in my PTE car is torn after a year of racing.

Any way to make them last longer?

Not particularly. The outer boot is $$$ but lasts for a while, the inner boot is $10-20 bucks and just rips.

The plastic bushings and the metal shims should last for a few years before they need to be replaced.
