My brother has a V6 Odyssey that's had a mysterious oil leak for a while now. He took it to the Honda dealer and they said one of the "engine block bolts" was leaking and they'd fix it for $250. He asked me about it, and asked if it was this:
http://www.enginebuildermag.com/2012/01 ... 6-engines/I did a little more research and it seems like this is a common issue, the main bearing cap sidebolts (never heard of those before) tend to leak- the fix is to remove the bolt, clean and dry it off, apply some RTV sealant, then reinstall the bolt, torquing to the proper torque.
Sounds simple enough to me, the only real problem I could see is if there's a clearance problem getting to those bolts. I told my brother we should at least try it, maybe save $250..
Anyone done this or familiar with these engines?
Thanks!
ps- to confuse things even more, my brother called the service guy at Honda to clarify what the repair entails, and he said that they'd have to drop the oil pan to replace the bolts- which sounds like BS to me and makes me really want to not give them the business.
