Vincent, show Rodney the pictures of your phenolic pistons so Rodney can really freak out.

You're using AX6s on the Z06?

If I remember correctly the setup for a C5 Z06 was XP8s rear XP10s front or possibly 10s/12s.

For me 10's and 8's front to rear. You could do 12/10's or I think Graham used 20's in the front.

Was this before or after you started using air ducts? That's a lot of heat, but at least it all wasn't being transmitted back to the brake fluid.

Yes, but I have a friend with a CS who's had ducting the entire time and his started to crumble the same way.

It will be soon since I have custom stainless-steel pistons now.

I've seen that pic before and I've seen those bling upgraded pistons. Since my track events are limited and VK is a much better track driver than I am, not going to sweat it yet. I actually have another set of front calipers, so I have a back up if needed....

The pad material is a good buffer of heat from the pistons and fluid. If you run them down really thin it does more and more damage. I recommend running pads material no thinner than the backing plate. The backing plate base material should be thicker than stock by a good margin and heat treated. Cheaper pads especially with single piston calipers will wear more in the center and actually bend. You see that a lot at tracks like CMP where the straights are too short for the brakes to really cool down. If you do those things it really prevents a significant amount of potential damage to the pistons.

Anyone use Porterfield R4-E's? They say it's a lower-friction/higher-temperature version of the R4 suitable for endurance use. Carbotech is out of XP8's for the Duff car and I have to go to VIR for 24 hours, so I ordered a set because they were in stock. It was that or Hawk Blues, and I didn't like Hawk Blues last time I used them.

We have a relatively light (2400 lbs) car on 205/50-15 200 treadwear street tires with no ABS. The Blues were difficult for us to modulate, so we ended up locking up the brakes a lot. Something like a Hawk HP+ or a Carbotech AX6 was a whole lot easier to modulate, and we have used those for HPDE's, but those won't handle the heat of hours of racing, so they work for a bit, and then disintegrate in clouds of smoke after a few hours. The XP8's are a nice compromise, low enough friction that we can modulate them on street tires and they hold up to a 24 hour race. If you have a heavier car on more/better rubber, then a more aggressive pad may work well for you, especially if you have ABS to keep you from locking them up. Given that our car is pretty horrible in every regard, especially acceleration, finer control of weight transfer at turn-in is very important to us as it lets us carry more speed, so we're kind of picky about brake compounds. Having my brother driving the car is also a factor, as he is congenitally incapable of braking early or easy, even if we have a huge lead at Sebring and he should be in car preservation mode for 29 more lousy minutes until we've got it mathematically won and then he can drive like a lunatic to the checker but he won't, so we need to have something on the car that will handle a lot of heat for extended periods of time.

hummmm... I think based on talking w/ VK and Stephen, I'm still going w/ the blues. That said, I think I'm picking up a set of GT500 brembo's this evening. Larger rotor and 4 pot caliper. Hawks too much at this point? Go w/ the carbotechs?

You won't go wrong with the Blues; they are cheap, will take as much abuse as you want to heap on them, and will easily last all weekend. I'm just spoiled by the Carbotechs for threshold braking and trail-brake modulation. But like I said, my car is horrible and I want every advantage I can get.

Go with the Blues. FYI regarding their notorious corrosive dust, that dust was left on my track wheels for, and I'm embarrassed to say, four months. The wheels never got wet, so I was able to simply wash it off with soap and water with no ill effects.
