I could use a little help here. My '96 miata has the check engine light on, most of the time. The car runs fine. I suspect I know the culprit, O2 sensor behind the cat, but I haven't been able to hook up a diagnostic tool. When my work schedule lightens up a little, I'm planning on replacing that O2 sensor and finally installing the cat-back exhaust I have. I'm know most autoparts stores (autozone, advanced, etc.) will do a diagnostic check for free, but only on OBD2, and I'm 98% sure this car is OBD1.
Here's what I'm looking for: A cheap/free option to get the light diagnosed, or preferably a tuning shop that can diagnose the light, then re-progam the ecu, so that the check engine light won't come on due to pollution control nonsense. I'm not looking for any performance gains, but convenience gains. I do drive the car on the street, so I need things to appear legal, so the car will pass inspection. Does anyone have the ability and willingness to do the diagnostic/ re-progaming for a 6-pack (craft beer)? If not what is a good shop for me to go to? I haven't searched amazon/ebay for diagnostic tools, yet, but if anybody has a recommendation in that direction, I'm listening. I'm really looking to get out of all of this for <$50 if possible, just to give you a point of reference when I say cheap.
thanks, Turner
