The rallyx is Sunday, and I just got a chance to drive my Subaru with the replacement transmission, and something is horribly wrong. I suspect that the new (used) transmission has a final drive ratio that does not match the 4.11 ratio stamped on the rear diff. It was impossible to check on the replacement transmission since there were no serial numbers on it that I could find, and I have only the assessment from Wagner's to go on.
To test this hypothesis I put both ends of the car on jack stands and then placed tape markers in the same spot on the tires. Theoretically if I rotate the drive shaft by hand the tape markers should remain in the same position as the front tires rotate at the same rate as the back tires. But when I rotated the drive shaft a few times the front and rear tires were as much as 160 degrees off, indicating they're rotating at different speeds.
What happened when I drove the car around the block was it seemed normal in 1st, and then at anything faster than that horrible grinding noises came from both the front and the rear. There was nothing wrong with the rear diff before, so a final drive mismatch seems to be the most likely culprit.
Have I missed anything? Could something else have gone wrong?
