I'm thinking about changing the brake pads on the BRZ and I wondering if anyone can recommend a brake compound that will work well for autocross/street use. Ideally it will have high friction in the low to mid temp range and low dusting.

You might check with Sam Strano to see if he still recommends Ferodo DS2500. They were fine on my CM car after years of running Hawk HPS. Both were low dust and worked fine cold. I was looking for a "little" more bite compared to the HPS and I'm not sure I got it (hard to tell with the extremely short CM braking zones  ) Certainly no negatives compared to HPS.

Dick, did you have any trouble with deposits? I used to run these on my prelude at hpde and they would always ruin a new set of rotors after a weekend. The vibration after a weekend was terrible. I don't recall how much they dusted.

Mike,

Which pads did you have deposit problems with, HPS or DS2500? I didn't have any deposits with either but a FF autocrossing barely gets any heat into the brakes even with fairly close together runs at an EVO TnT. 8)

FF road racers from Australia like the DS2500's by the way. I don't know if any US FF guys use them.

My 2012 sure gets heat into the oem non-Brembo brakes with back to back runs at an EVO TnT. Enough that the brakes smelled and I could see heat waves. :!:

Dick, I had deposit issues with the DS2500.

I have never run a more aggressive pad for autocross so I'm not much help to Shawn here.

I have enjoyed using these on the S2000 and WRX. A little dustier than OEM, but better performance in Autocross.

I'm of the Hawk perspective and I've had HP+ on the car for autocross/DD duty since 2007.

+1 on HPS for DD/AutoX. HP+ squeal like a school bus.

Thanks for the input everyone. It sounds like the HPS or maybe the stoptechs is where I want to be.

Nothing says race car more than school bus brakes.

Shawn- I have HP+ for the BRZ and they are great. A little hard on the rotors, but stop the car right now with good modulation.

But the school bus thing that Cash mentioned? Yeah that and then some.

I was going to try Stoptechs next. You are welcome to try my HP+ pads. There is a ton of life left.

Scott - Thanks for the offer. I may borrow those HP+ at some point in time. Sounds like they may a great pad for autocross but annoying on the street.

Since you are thinking about trying the Stoptech, I think I may get a set of HPS and then we can swap a run in each others car at some point to see which one of those two is better.

HP+ dusted a LOT on my CM car in autocross (no street use  ) and for an extremely light mid engine car tended to lock the front tires far too easily. Note that for some production type cars and drivers the HP+ are too aggressive from posts I've read so it may depend on what you like. HPS did not dust or squeal on the CM car.

FYI the oem pads on my Mustang created some dust when used hard for 32 runs in a row but no real issue.

I've run Hawk HP+ and HPS on the white Integra and the Si.

After a while the dust was so bad on the HP+'s that I just couldn't keep them on for daily driving because the paint on the wheels starting pitting. Jeff at Majestic Solutions showed me that their wheel acid was a great solution but it just didn't feel right spraying my wheels twice a month with acid to keep them clean. I can't imagine anything with more stopping power though but the cost is quick wear, cost, and the grinding noise, which you get used to. They're awesome pads, but if you're daily driving on them it comes with a price. I guess the other downside is that they are a bit touchy and make heel-toeing a bit of a challenge at first.

I switched to the HPSes and I don't really think they're worth the cost since they were barely more aggressive than the stock pads but quite a bit more cost. They dust wasn't pad though since they're more mild.

There are several pads that are in between these two and the PBR (Axxis Ultimate replacements) used to be my favorite. I'm not sure if they make them for the BRZ but if they do, they're worth checking out. Edit: just checked and no-go but I'm sure there are more options in between the HPS and Pluses.

I would honestly skip the Hawk HPS entirely, it's a bad street pad with bad pedal feel. I'm pretty sure that some ceramics have better coefficient of friction numbers over the HPS.

I've tried the HP+'s on the MS3 and didn't like them on the street or track. I use the HPS's on the Miata, Vette, and MS3. What I like about them is that they don't have a massive initial bite and can be modulated very accurately. My cars all have very big brakes for their weight, the initially grippy brake pads make it easier to upset the car at autoX's. On the track I use DTC 60's and am very gentle with them.
