yea, I know what you are thinking, but no...............

2005 Chevy Suburban 6.0 3/4 ton. Has been throwing codes for about six months now. Initial read from O'Reilly's was a bad O2 sensor so I replaced that. Next I'm getting a dash warning to tighten gas cap while still throwing codes but now for air entering the sealed system. Replaced gas cap with new OEM cap but no relief, still throwing codes.

I'd swear I walked past it the other day and smelled gas fumes. I'm thinking maybe a crack in the filler neck or maybe some kind of filler vent failure. Truck has about 70K on it and hasn't been driven much in the last five years or so. Recently had to replace the saddle tank crossover fuel line as it was cracked and pissing fuel on to the exhaust......... nice huh?

Any thoughts other than sell the POS?

You mentioned you thought you smelled gas. My 99 Silverado smells of gas for a while after I fill the tank. The odor seems to come from the front, maybe the charcoal canister area, but I don't get a check engine light for it. Just a thought.

Vacuum line including lines associated with the evap control system? Our 88 van (Dodge) had a gasoline smell that turned out to be an evap control system vacuum line at the engine.

What Jordan mentioned was my first thought. Either the charcoal canister itself or lines to it.

This might be of help:

A lot of service bulletins point towards a "vent valve solenoid" and moving the filter box with a kit. - AB

I guess VK is locked up on suicide watch (a Chevy with a CEL?? Say it ain't so!!!)

Sounds like you did the easy thing by replacing gas cap- the code is telling you that there's a leak in what is supposed to be a sealed fuel (vapor) system. There should be a line that feeds the fuel vapors back into the intake so they don't escape into the atmosphere. There's also probably a "purge valve" that is on or near the evap canister which is probably just a plastic container.

So there are lots of places for leaks, the vapor hoses can crack and leak, as can the plastic evap canister (most often at the plastic nipple where the small hose connects. And like you said, the fuel filler neck could possibly have a leak, even the fuel tank itself. I'd pay special attention to anything that was removed or messed with when you (or Dave) replaced the crossover pipe.

Culprit was a vapor return line (I think) which of course ran over the gas tank so it had to be dropped. Looked like the mice got to it actually. Seems to have fixed the issue.

Dave wanted nothing to do with it............ Hiester repaired it.
