My E36 M3 is throwing an error code that indicates the ignition coil on cylinder 4 is bad, but are they counting from the back or the front? Google does not seem to have an answer to this very important question.

Thanks!

AFAIK, all engine cylinder numbers go from front to back, so in your case, #4 would be toward the firewall.

Thanks, that helps. Of course, there was a 50% chance I'd get it right guessing, but this is easier ;-)

Definitely front to back.

You can swap coils around to see if the code moves with the coil.

I have a box full of used coils if you want to use a different one for troubleshooting.

I wonder if this is a good time to swap spark plugs as well? The last time it had new ones was at 85K, and its at 155K now. I don't expect a big improvement, but it couldn't hurt, right?
