+1

My green student this weekend dumped his 335i for an S2000 and has absolutely nothing nice to say about newer bimmers... Turbo failures, fuel pump, etc, etc.

I've talked to Chuck about the E90/92 M3s a few times in the last few months, and the 335 single/bi-turbo models aside, the E9X generation 3 series are probably one of the more reliable generation 3 series, whether it be the 328/330 or M3. They aren't suffering from numerous bushing issues like E30/36/46 cars do. The control arms and ball joints aren't failing. The engines are more reliable. Electronic issues are not rampant.

Anyway, the lack of dipstick and odd (and pricey) battery reset thing aside (and not considering the turbo models) there aren't a lot of bad things that can be said about the E9X generation. Granted, I still very much enjoy my E46 and the gotchas around it are cheap and simple to fix/repair and the car is, in general, easy to work on.

My wife's E90 is no Cavalier, but it's pretty good. I did go out of my way to find a non turbo, low option car, with some CPO warranty time left on it.

The transmission is back from Rex's and we're good to go. I'm glad I stopped trying to take it apart, was going at all wrong. Had to remove the back part of the trans first and remove 5th gear. From there several detents from the side of the case and then the case came apart. It would have been impossible to try to get the gears back into place w/ out breaking open the trans case.

An inspection showed everything to be in surprisingly good shape for 175k miles. Reset the spider gears and reassembled. Everything works and we have some rags stuffed in the axles holes to keep everything in place for now. If not this evening, the car will be moving tomorrow on it's own accord...

The tranny is back in w/ the help of Jordan. Couldn't find the "sweet spot" in regard to the splines lining up, but once we did the tranny slid right into place. Still need to button up the top side before I start on the axles and suspension. Didn't quite get it all installed this evening. Probably won't make the meeting tomorrow, on a mission now to get this installed and I won't be here this weekend to work on it.

When I align a trans, I put a big breaker bar on the crank bolt and rotate the engine a few degrees as I rock the tranny into place.

Couldn't rock the tranny too much side to side w/ the aligment studs in place. I kept bumping the flywheel with a screw driver trying to find the sweet spot. Easy to turn, at least on that car. Took a few minutes but popped right into place. Amost happy now....

I did notice one interesting thing about the starter. Instead of kicking the engagement gear away from the starter, this one was pulled in. The starter gear sat past the flywheel, lined up like starter motor/flywheel/starter gear. Never seen that before.

Since you had the trans apart, have you shifted it through the gears just to make sure all feels right? Just a thought before you get too far along.

This time, do it with the axles in :) - AB

LOL... I've learned my lesson here. Rex went through the gears and I did as well. The shifter feels fine and there's no hint of binding even w/ out gear oil. I'm pretty confident it will shift correctly once it's all put back together....

I see Jordan is registered for NCCAR on the 28th, better finish it soon, or he'll be breathing down your neck

Working on it.... No way I can finish it tonight unless I work till midnight and I don't see the point. Have all of the top side completed and most of the drivers side put back together. I have both axles in and started the car and checked the shifting. No revving of the engine since the transfer case is still dry, but everything works. At least that's a step in the right direction.

I'll need next week to wrap this up and hopefully Friday I can get it aligned. I think I'm rapidly approaching Brice's timeline of taking a month to get this 1 week job wrapped up
