Looks like the rear axle hub is warped and needs to be replaced. The wheel wobbles when turned, and at speed it changes into a clicking/thumping noise. Probably going to need a bearing too, but that seems easier to find than the hub so far. Trying to get them before VIR this weekend... Anyone got a spare laying around I could buy? :-)

Thanks!

Sounds like the bearing is bad- doubtful that the hub has magically warped itself.

Easiest/quickest thing to do would be replace the whole trailing arm, but you could also just replace the bearing in that trailing arm.

I've got a bunch of E30 parts cars and can supply whatever you need. I think I even have a NEW rear bearing if you want to go that route.

Thanks for the reply, Bret.

It makes a predictable, slight wobble on every revolution in the same spot. Still think it could be just the bearing?

I have Timken LM503310 bearings ordered Amazon prime next-day, they should be here tomorrow. And my friend at a BMW dealership ordered me an axle hub which should arrive tomorrow too. I'm taking the whole hub assembly off tonight and will deliver it with the bearing to him tomorrow to get it pressed in. We'll see how it goes...

Yeah, unless you hit something I don't see how the hub could've gotten bent, and the e30's I've seen that have hit something in the rear usually don't suffer from bent hubs, it's usually the subframe and/or trailing arm that bends.

Sounds like you've got it covered, but let me know if you need something.

Thanks again.

I didn't hit anything that I know of. I replaced all the brake rotors and installed wheel studs before my last track weekend. At the track, 3 laps in, the motor's rocker arm broke and I had to tow it home. A month or so later when the head was rebuilt, we took it to the non-points autocross last year, and it ran great. On the way home from Danville, we started hearing the thumping noise. Maybe we hit something funky at the autocross? Unlikely, but that's about all I can think. Hopefully my mechanic will be able to determine if the hub is bent once he presses out the bearing.

I appreciate your help. Hopefully I won't have to call you Friday afternoon asking to pillage your parts car!

It seems all the stuff I have wanted via Amazon was not available with Prime. :(

The "wheel bearing" from Amazon arrived and isn't even a wheel bearing. Looks like a really thin bearing race. I was able to pick up the right one from O'Reilly Auto for $116. :-( Good news is Amazon refunded my money including shipping and don't even want me to send it back.

The trailing arm was removed last night and getting the new bearing & hub pressed in today, then we're installing it tonight. Leaving for VIR at 6am. :-D

Your mechanic sucks I bet I'm way better then him zach. Usualy when wheel bearings go bad they have play and make noise. I have never seen one cause a shimmy in the hub assembly. They will make lots of noise though. 8) :soap:

Aaron/Zach, what end up being the issue? Was it the hub? Or wheel? Or just the bearing?

well for a short time the new hub and bearing fixed the issue. but after coming back from the track last weekend zach was saying that the car was making the same noise. i am skeptical till i hear the noise for my self. if the noise is present again i am starting to suspect that the trailing arm's spindle (the part that holds the bearing in place) is bad. after a whyll the bearings guide in the spindle can begin to deform and make it so that the bearing can turn or became cockeyed or even deform its self. this in turn would cause the wheel to wobble and the rotor to wobble as it directly affects its rotation. this i am skeptical of to but the old geysers in the shop say that this could be the issue. i was also thinking that the wheel, rotor, or new ARP wheel studs could be contributing to the issue, but i will have to do some testes with the dial indicator to see if there is something killing the wheel hub. i have to say i have never personally had this problem but have herd of it happening. stupid cars i just cant get away form them even when im off work

Wow. I used to just measure my junk with a plain old ruler when I was a kid. Dial indicator? That's serious business :) - AB
