Liz is looking at go pro cameras, etc. and is asking me questions about things I don't know anything about. So can somebody make a recommendation on megapixels, size and type of memory card, batteries and anything else you can think of?

Stages will be up to about 20ish minutes, with up to about 10ish stages over 2 days.

The market is filled with possibilities, not just GoPro. I just bought one from LIC called Ego for $110 off Amazon (although now they are priced closer to $130). 1.5-2hrs per charge, holds a 32 GB micro SD card and has a standard threaded camera mount. Also, it has a wifi app that can turn it on/off remotely (not necessary for me, but certainly useful in some situations.)

The mounts are very similar to GoPros, and with minimal trimming can fit in their clip-style suction and curved mounts.

I love my go pro.

I am a big fan of go pros because of their customer service and field reps. I helped crew for the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb 2 years ago and they were very willing to give you free spare sticky mounts, housings, bendy bits, etc. just because they were excited to see you using their camera! We had one get run over (we were stupid and poorly attached it to the bottom of the car for a suspension cam) and they were happy to help us out with a new case and lens.
Another thing I like is nearly everyone has them. If you need a last minute part for one at a race - let it be a battery, a bendy bit, a sticky pad mount, suction cup mount, etc - odds are someone there has some you can borrow.

Those two reasons are why I vote Go Pro but other cameras are great as well and worth checking out.

Things to look into:
Ability for Mic in - you know you want to be able to hear you guys over the intercom ...assuming you have audio out on there. Otherwise ignore this step.
Ability to film while charging. I plan on rigging up a hardwired power connection for my interior cam so I don't have to worry about the battery dying during a long day. I think running out of memory is not a concern.

Keep in mind that some cameras are very sensitive to vibration and will shut off randomly. Best to go with a camera designed for motorsports environment.

There is good camera discussion over on the Chump forum currently. I'd post the link but I'm using my phone.

I am about to pull the trigger on a GoPro H3Black (trip to Nurburgring this summer), but needed to do some additional research first. My concern is battery length. What type of external power is available for the Hero?

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

There was a firmware update for the original HD Heros about 2 years ago so that you can attach a USB power source so it'll always be powered. The HD Hero2 and Hero3 will film while hardwired with no issues.

I'm going to upgrade to a Hero3 with an external mic and I'll splice in some wires to keep it powered.

Yep! I've used a USB car charger and the usb cable that comes with the Go Pro to do that on a long road trip (taking a picture every minute for the entire drive). It worked great I just would like a more permanent spliced hardwire connection for the race car.

If it's an HD Hero2, it has a Mic In port.

Just off of the top of my head, the GoPro lineup looks like this...

Hero: First camera, not HD.
Hero HD: Can record HD, can upgrade firmware for hardwired power
Hero HD 2: Has a microphone in and a few features, works with various backpacks
Hero HD 3: The black one is the crazy 4k resolution and has built in Wi-Fi and all the features from the Hero 2

If you want a cheap, feature complete GoPro, I'd look at the Hero HD 2 since the microphone in gives you a lot of flexibility.

Can't recommend the GoPros enough. They're sturdy, take great video, and have lots of features through their modular backpack and mounting system. Go with a Hero2 or newer, and spring for the Hero3 Black if you want the best.
