I tried to order a new set of V700 Victoracers (205/60/13) from Tire Rack and they are on backorder for "an unknown period of time". :x %$#&

If I want to be on new rubber before the May event, I either need to find another source or go with a different tire. So, does anybody know another source of Victoracers? Or, does anybody have experience with a)ECSTA V700's and/or b) running a 215 tire on a 6" wheel (I have to go up a size with the ECSTAs).

Thanks!

Try Discount Tire. the price I got from them was the same as the price from Tire Rack when you add having them shipped, mounted and balanced.

I could not get them however to add Road Hazard, Flat Spot, or give me a mileage guarantee :P

Discount Tire is also out and getting the same message from Kumho. So, I ordered the ECSTA V700 215/50/13. Hopefully they will be slightly stickier, but the diameter is much smaller so my gearing may kill me! 3rd gear may get a lot more use this year!

Phil,

If you are lucky the revs per mile specs on Tirerack.com will be correct . . . since they are almost identical for the two tires even though the unloaded diameters are different . . .

They should be about the same. for every 5 in the first number you go up you need to go down by five in the second( 185/65r15=190/60r15) or there abouts. I used the same equasion for my truck when I went from 14" wheels to 16" wheels I spent many hours finding just the right size where my speedo was close. You should be fine Phil, it's not that drastic of a change, wider tire with less sidewall. too bad about the victoracers though I was thinking on getting a set to play with for kicks.

I don't understand the Tire Rack's revs/mile. The circumference changes quite a bit with a 1" diameter reduction. In fact, they show lower revs/mile for the small diameter, which has to be wrong. :?

By my calcs, the diameter change results in my 2nd gear redline dropping from 57 to 54 mph which is almost 6%. Not huge perhaps, but since I'm on the rev limiter a lot on most of our courses right now it may be a problem. Or, I'll just start using 3rd more.

Phil.

just a heads up - I read your post, then saw this on the Miata list. At first I thought they were talking about the 710s, but they do mean the Escta 700. I have no idea what's up with Kumho or their R compounds but its probably worth doing some research. The Victoracers seem to be fine. Other options are also mentioned.

----------
Wally,

Having just experienced two shaved Kuhmo Escta V700 225/45/15's coming apart at
Mid-Ohio and the posts here about them:
http://forum.miata.net/ubb/ultimatebb.p ... 4;t=003510
http://forum.miata.net/ubb/ultimatebb.p ... 4;t=003482

I would not touch an Escta with a 10 foot pole for a track day until Kuhmo gets
their act pulled together with them. Just my opinion. The Victoracers which
have a different compound seem to not suffer from the same problem. I have no
experience with the Azenis.

I'll be using the Hoosier R's going forward or might try out the new Avon R
compounds from Tirerack.

No idea how good they are.

Yikes!
I'll keep an eye on them to make sure they don't come apart!

I built an excel calculator a few years back that works great. It also lets me play with gear ratios and final drive to determine impact on mph in each gear. Takes all the guesswork out of it!

You young folk would be surprised how useful a sliderule can be for doing gear calculations and for displaying the rpm relative to speed in a gear. Still handier sometimes than using a gearing chart (on paper or on computer). :D

Phil,

Other than typos or measurement/calculation errors by Tire Rack or Kumho the only explanation I can think of is if the actual rolling circumference of the "taller" tire is less than the measured diameter would imply. You might do a measurement with both the old and new tires where you measure the rolling circumference by making marks on the ground at the beginning and the end of one complete revolution. I would be surprised if this is the explanation but it is probably the only way to find out for sure.

Does the 1" reduction mean we have to recalculate the Exhaust to trailer angle of the ramp to ensure clearance. :banghead:

Trailer? If the car is trailered now you might as well put real race tires (i.e. slicks) on it. Lots of tire size choices and I'll be chasing you if I show up at an event in my FF!
