A friend at work is looking for a good VW mechanic for general car repair (AC currently). He has tried a couple of shops around here, and hasn't been satisfied (I'm not gonna list 'em; he may have had bad luck, and a re-recommendation might be worthwhile). I told him to do it, but for some reason he doesn't think that spending all his spare time under the car is fun. I just don't understand.

Oh, in case it matters, it's a 99 Jetta.

I thought if you owned a Vw you had to be willing to fix it J/k from what I have heard Adam has hit the nail on the head for vdub repair.
