Ok, before we get into suggestions like Koni or KYB, let me preface this with the following qualifications:
1. This is a commute and family car for a coworker. No AutoX, no high performance driving of any kind.
2. The shocks must be relatively inexpensive, but need to last at least another 50k (the stockies have 100k on them, but are dead)
3. Should handle true to the original intent of the car.

So, with that said, any recommendations? There's always going stock again, but I suspect this will be the most expensive route for him, so looking for a quality shock that will last.

Thanks!

Where have you been hiding a VW from me :?:

But really Boge's are your best bet for what you are looking for. Better than stock and only very slightly stiffer. Oh yeah cheaper than stock too :D

Bieldstein HD (not sport) work very well on VW's I have driven
several A3's with them and are OEM on a lot of cars. Bogue are
cheep but wont' last the time period you state.

Going to have to diagree with you there Mark. Boge is the stock manufacturer for most VW shocks to begin with. They will most definately last a long time on a daily driver.

And bilstiens are both twice the cost and much stiffer, two things I wouldn't recomend for a daily driver on a budget.

You might consider KYB GR-2's. I just put them on my '95 Protege, and they seem to be slightly stiffer than stock, but are non adjustable and very cheap. I got them for $48 per corner through TireRack. - AB

Another option is the new "touring" shock from Bilstien. The cheapest source I have seen for these is $219 for a set of four. This price is for the MK IV chassis 4cyl VW's
