I got into on FACEbook with miniusa. I commented that they should put more info on their site other than "see the NHSTA site for more info" They commented and then must have blocked me or something because I couldn't submit my response.

They should have put an alert out on how freaking tough it is to change out the alternator on an '06 MCS! Jordan's alternator was slowly dying and killing the car when you loaded up the electrics like lights, fan, stereo and such. After getting it towed to the house, we found the alternator was only putting out 12.4 volts and needed to output 14. It simply couldn't keep up w/ demand.

Anyway, 5 hours later it was replaced. You had to remove the right front tire, fender liner, front bumper skin and bumper and many nuts and bolts just to GET to the alternator. On top of that, had to have a special tool to get to the drive belt tensioner.

This was a learning experience and I think I saved myself and Jordan a ton of bucks by doing this ourselves. The alternator itself was pricy, but it was a new alternator and belt and hopefully no need to replace anytime soon.

I got a "free" loaner from Dave Davis, which I broke and had Mark Cooper reweld for me.

A common problem. I got a replacement from the vendor that was beef up.
Apparently engineering is not a strong point at MINI.
Did I just say that?

Fixed.

A coworker told me a long screw driver could be substituted for the special tool, no? He's not that mechanically inclined either.

What kills these alternators? Seems early for a modern car . . . especially at Mini prices. My 74 260Z would gradually lose diodes until Datsun improved the part and "something" happened that caused a failure in our 84 200SX. No problems with a series of Mustangs or with our 88 Dodge van (so far).

My 2003 still has it's original alternator.
I hope Jordan's was a fluke.
(Get it... a Fluke)

teeheee.... how many miles your mini now?

If you look at the forums like NAM, it seems to occur on occasion, but not a common issue. It's a moving part, so it's going to fail in time.
