Now that I'm back into an 08 mustang, I now have to put up w/ the damn TPMS drama. I'm running a set of winter tires w/ no sensors and I have the summer tires in the garage. While the tires are close enough to the car to reset the monitor, once I get rolling I get the warning. Been looking over the web trying to figure out how, at lease on the mustang, these things work. Found a nice writeup on the Ford site for these dumber style sensors for the 07-09 cars. Looks like the '10+ cars went to different sensor.

So as far as I can tell, these sensors on the mustang are a combination pressure and accelerometer plus the battery to transmit the info via IR to monitor. This makes sense because I tried the sensors in the PVC tube trick and it failed. Seems for this to work correctly, the tires have to be in motion thus the need for the accelerometer.

I'll be running 3 different sets of wheels/tires on the car depending on the season and what I'm doing and I don't want to invest in 3 sets of sensors. I have looked, unsuccessfully, for an electronic device to emulate the IR info for the sensors.

According to this....

http://www.fordtechservice.dealerconnec ... 102010.pdf

the '07-'09 sensors run at 315mhz. Is there anyway to fool the on board sensor w/ a simple transmitter that spoofs sensor data?

It's easy enough to reach over and just hit the reset button on the dash, but then you have deal w/ the amber tire warning light and that's distracting at night. So this may be a great tool to develop and sell to racers.

Anyone know of any devices that spoofs the sensors?

James, the warning also kills the info center.

Rodney, I was under the impression that the PVC trick worked for the mustangs. Please post back with what you find.

sorry for the ignorant question, but have you tried to find a spare used set of sensors to install on your different sets of wheels? Or is it specific to your car?

I did this w/ my previous 07 mustang. Works for a few days and then you get the failure. In my initial post I mentioned the summer tires being in the garage would reset the monitor. Now that's failed as well since the tires have been off the car for a little over a week. There has to be motion on the sensors for these to work correctly.

I can buy used and replacement monitors and "train" the sensors to the car, but now I would have to break down the current set of winter tires in install the sensors and rebalance, which I don't really want to do. I was hoping some mad scientist type would have come up w/ a simple codeable sending unit to spoof the sensors.

Ah, I see. Is there a performance problem when the TPMS warning goes off? If not, maybe just deal with the idiot light until spring, then add sensors/retrain at that point? Of course, if the car goes into limp mode or is otherwise annoying I can see why you'd want to deal with it now.

BTW, nice to see the Progress/ Duke merger run into significant problems lately...hope it means continued job security for you!

The TPMS on the mustang is simply a warning light and warning on the info screen, no impact to the throttle or anything else power train related, at least that I know of. Like I said, this is a pretty watered down system.

As for the merger, it does throw a monkey into the wrench. Speculation is about a 2-3 month setback. I'm hoping they lift a server freeze so I can do some maintenance stuff done before the end of the year, otherwise I have to wait until mid Jan. Oh well, at least I have work to do now!

Rodney, do you know if the tpms is in the engine computer or is it a separate box?

I'm guessing that this is incorrect?

I can't imagine why that system would need a 25amp fuse.

The chatter I've read states it to be integrated into the ECU and not a separate system. Not sure about the fuse, haven't seen that listed anywhere. Worth looking at.

I suspect the tuners know how to turn it off, but their default answer is that they won't disable it due to federal regulations.

I wonder if you got to know someone like fastlane if they would disable it for you.

Do you have the CD shop manual for your car?

If so, the manual may "work the same" as mine in that you may be able to follow a link to get more info.

I looked (briefly) at the manual for my 2012 last night. There is a link from the specific TPMS page to another page that shows what else uses the same controller or controller "function area" of something like the PCM (I didn't think to check that).

In the 2012 the fuse is 10 amps. The linked controller block diagram includes a couple of other functions (3rd seat position . . . not relevant to Mustangs . . . and something "shifter" related.

Even 10 amps sounds huge compared to the "load" which should be just data I think.

I have one and it rocks. It's super easy to use since all the references to other pages/sections have links that take you right to where you need to be.

I got mine on Ebay for like $10.
