Anybody know anything about them? They look like a cheap version of the dynomax superturbo. But they are about half the cost. How much flow CFM's do you think I really need on a 115 HP 123 CID Cavalier?

My advise would be to leave the cav alone and buy a toyota :D just kidding. The only thrush I ever delt with was cherry bombs(sounded good hanging off both sides of the Chevette, and sounded like a Harley from the side) I have found that the muffler is only a small part of the equasion. If you looked at my Toyota I have 6-7 90 degree bends in the exhaustwith it was assembled with in 83 the muffler is mostly for the sound of the car, the rest of the exhaust needs to be rebone atleast from the cat. But I think that muffler would be a little over kill on the poor cav

You'll be saying oh my poor toyota next time I show up and run HS.

I'm litterally getting rid of half my exhaust system when I install this muffler. But the only thing I know about thrush is they made old skool glasspacks. I just liked it because it'd be loud and it's dirty friggin cheap.

I say that now, every time I run the old beast, but for 240 dollars it runs great.

just so you know

Any part of the exhaust system beyond (downstream from) the header/manifold or catalytic converter, if so equipped, may be substituted provided the system meets the requirements of 3.5. Stainless steel heat exchangers are permitted only if the physical dimensions and configuration remain unchanged. Modifications of any type, including additions to or removal of, the catalytic converters, thermal reactors, or any other pollution control devices in the exhaust system are not allowed and the system must be operable. Replacement catalytic converters must be OEM if the vehicle has not exceeded the 5-year/50,000 mile warranty period as mandated by the EPA. Converters must be of the same type and size and used in the same location as the original equipment converter(s). This does not allow for a high performance unit. If the vehicle has exceeded the 5 year/50,000 mile warranty period, replacement catalytic converters must be OEM-type as per Section 13.

from the SCCA ruke book

Rob,

I remember Thrush from my High School days. That means they are really old... We used to use their glass packs for the same reason. Cheap and loud. They're a straight through shot. So keep in mind if your exhaust flow is only being restricted by the factory muffler then it'll be loud and you'll loose a lot of torque that you probably don't want to give up. Also note we have some sites we use were really loud cars will cause us grief.

Take a look at a Flowmaster Delta series in a generic fit. You can get them cheap. You'll get better flow, louder, some backpressure, and they actually have some resonance control. Resonance may not be an issue for you but is for us fiberglass car owners... Given the HP numbers you're talking about a single 2" exhaust is more than enough as long as you can keep the bends in the run reasonable. If you get 5HP at the wheels I would be very surprised unless your factory muffler is completely choking the engine.

This muffler isn't a glass pack but runs along those same lines. The one I'm buying is basically the same thing as the dynomax superturbo with the exception that it has less fiberglass packing and no tuned flow baffles. Our stock mufflers are supposedly quite terrible and really cork up the exhaust flow.

I wasn't really ever that worried about the torque curve as I have plenty for the size of my engine, its really the only thing that makes my car a decent autoxer. But really I was hoping to not have the power die off quite so much after 5700-5800 RPM. If I do lose alot of torque due to inadequate backpressure I can always toy with different tips to tune the backpressure to where I need it.

How well do turbo style mufflers work??

I've used turbo mufflers only once on a custom exhaust I fabricated. On my old SS I put headers and 3" duals down to a pair of turbo mufflers then 3" tubing out of them to the bumper. That was almost a straight line shot. The turbos gave some backpressure at lower rpms and I had good low end torque. At about 4krpm they would be wide open and flow plenty. They worked in that application quite well and weren't expensive. A lot more quiet than glass packs but still had a nice rumble from the cam and headers. Had enough torque from that mouse motor to almost lift the front wheels

FWIW, I've got a Dynomax Super Turbo on my Z-24 with 2.25" piping from the cat-back. Just got the same setup on the Miata. It works and sounds fine on both IMO. YMMV
