i don't know, as most Chinese folk are relatively short in stature and they tend to live well into their eighties even though most of them labor very hard for their entire existence i would think they could be considered "sturdy" Pete.

Yes, the newer mustangs have a German designed, Chinese built transmission. Getrag MT-82. I'm more worried about it being designed by hans than built in china though.

Wait a sec..., didn't he blow his motor due to a mishap from the tranny?

Good point, all though I really didn't blow my motor, its was only a few broken valve springs which weren't OEM units, the valve train had been previously upgraded to crane parts and they did last 16 years, of course I wouldn't reuse that short block without serious inspection. I built what I built because I wanted too, hopefully it lasts 16 years.

Pete, don't assume that I'm taking up for the chinese transmission, as it is one of the reasons that I have not upgraded to the latest model Mustang. I like my old 5spd trans. If I didn't have a mustang, I certainly wouldn't let it stop me. Just like I wouldn't let the transmission problems in a Subaru stop me from buying one of those. I think the issue with that transmission is one of quality control and not one of being sturdy. Which it appears that they are dealing with the initial quality control issues.

Whoever said "They are not sturdy" needs to keep things in perspective. I used to be guilty of this myself. But you have to remember that there's an engine in front of that transmission that is making 400ft/lbs of torque. By NO means is it made of butter. If you compared it side by side to most transmissions you would find exactly the opposite. If you were to stick that engine in front of the majority of the transmissions that were sitting out there at that autocross, you would find out very quickly that they aren't "that sturdy". It would literally bust the transmissions apart. (research what happens when you stick a T5 behind a LS1). This isn't to say that they are bad transmissions, they just aren't capable of handling large amounts of torque.

In reality, it's easy to make a transmission when you don't have to handle a high load of torque, not so easy when you have to deal with enough torque that's capable of splitting a transmission case in two. And then you have to deal with people complaining that it feels heavy or clunky. Well, no kidding...

Amen to what Jason said!

All the previous Borg-Warner/Tremec transmissions used in "muscle cars" and the current Mustang manual are really tough transmissions which normally only break with power shifts and/or extensive road race use. The new Mustang manual apparently has some shifting related quality control issues.

FYI the 6 speed automatic in the 2011/2012 is built on the basic design of a tried and proven 4 speed automatic. The 6 speed is made in the US. The 2005 - 2010 5 speed auto was made in France but I don't know what the design was based on.

Bob Kendrick got rid of the legendary Buick Park Ave because of transmission woes. He was using NASCAR prepared Super T-10 transmissions build by Tex racing with steel separator plates, nickle gears, etc. The Olds 455 motor had enough torque to split the case in 10 min. or so of hammering on it. Bob also managed to blow up a brute strength rear end too.

yeah on asphalt i dont launch my wrx hard. if i had a late model sti, i would not worry near as much..still a little, but not as much.. believe me, with diesels putting out 1k pounds of torque, nothing can survive.. not even a suncoast built allison or torqueflite. you should see what diesels do to anything you put next to them when sled pulling. Driveshafts snapped, axles popped, transfer cases exploded, trannies burned up.. this all happens in seconds. :o

Ah, but for those 10 minutes, it was a glorious thing to behold! Image

Speaking of Mustangs, according to Motor Trend, you'll be able to order any 2013 with the Recaro seats from the Boss - cloth or leather. There will be a Track-Pack option for the new 420hp GT that includes Brembos, 3.73 gears, engine oil cooler, upgraded radiator, and Torsen differential. Can you say Boss on a budget?

Seems to be a good time to shop for a Mustang. :D
