My nephew Jason is selling his 99 1500 silverardo. Truck is a long bed, standard cab, 4.3 liter 6 banger and manual 5 speed. While he was on a test drive, the tranny "popped" out of first gear. Jason said this has happened before but he's just learned not to get into 1st gear very hard and hasn't had much issue w/ the tranny. The truck has 114k on the odo. Jason would like to get this fixed before he sells, but being a collage student, cash isn't readily available.

A quick look on the interweb shows this to be a common for these trucks (99-06) and the synchronizers. Seems the tranny was missing some parts by design and now is causing issues. Short of either replacing the tranny or fixing the sychnro, is there any fix for this? Some discussion on the web stated to possibly adjust the clutch rod.

I don't know anything about these trucks, so need some help and a cheap fix so Jason can sell it. Any advice is appreciated.

Don't know specifically about this transmission but popping out of gear like you describe is usually attributed to a bad synchro. No easy fix besides tearing into it and replacing the synchros.

I don't usually see how adjusting the clutch rod could make any difference unless it was extended so much that it wasn't allowing the clutch to fully disengage.

Other than that, the problem might get better with a different gear oil- I've had good luck with Redline MTL on older BMW gearboxes.

It probably won't help convince some buyers but this sounds like something that any driver could easily learn to deal with once they get used to driving the truck for a while.
