Why not just pull a cap or 2 to check the bearings? Silver = good, copper = bad.
Hi Mike,
I just re-read my post and left that out--whoops. I pulled off the #5 and #6 bearing cap, both were silver and the crank journal was smooth. Is it worth pulling a main bearing cap as well?
Ah, good to hear. IMO, no -- rod bearings are the typical failure. I'd bet the bottom end is fine! Start her up with someone "experienced" around, armed with a piece of tube or stethoscope. If it's just a sound with no other symptoms (can't recall) like oil pressure problems or performance, I bet it's something simple.
Get a recording of the noise and post it here
