My hope is that either the pilot bearing or throw out bearing are fubar when I pull them out and I'll know for sure what it was. But after reading all the info about slave cylinders on miata.net, I wouldn't want the new clutch to get eaten up by a bad slave cylinder.

Hell maybe this weekends issues were a combination of things: the fresh super ATE loosened up some gunk and clogged the slave cylinder AND a throwout/pilot bearing started getting noisy :).

Anyone want to let me borrow a trans jack :).

You don't need a trans jack, the transmission is super light. Also don't worry about removing the PPF from the diff. You can just unbolt the trans side and push it away then drop the output side past it.

What is your version of 'super light'? I don't remember mine being terribly difficult but we used a lift (thanks Steve!) and had a few people helping. I can't imagine it being lighter than a FWD Honda transmission and that surely isn't what I would call 'light'.

Sweet, bring it to work with you one day this week and I'll drop by and grab it if that's ok?

I wouldn't call 75 lbs. 'light', much less 'super light'. Maybe I'm just weak.

My comparison transmissions are a T-56 and a 700R4. 75lbs is light :)

I'm with James on that. we removed a t-56 at the chump race without a tranny jack. And the clutch made whirring noises right before it let go. the Miata is light compared to that!!!!

Guy on miata.net thinks it's a seized pilot bearing and that the nose of the input shaft is now spinning within the inner race of the pilot bearing when the clutch is depressed. Not sure how much I believe that given you'd think about a few revolutions of the input shaft in that seized bearing and the friction in that interface would cause some noise from the expansion of the metal.

I'm sure whatever it is will shine it's head once I get the parts off the car. I don't intend on pulling the flywheel unless the RMS is leaking. Any tricks to get the pilot bearing out of the flywheel? Puller? Fill with grease and hammer something the size if the ID into the cavity and have the hydraulic pressure push it out?

Just take the FW off, have it surfaced for good measure. Throw a RMS in there for good measure... It has over 100k on it so it's a smart idea to do it.

get a stock 1.6 flywheel and buy the clutch kit for that. It gives you a lightweight option with little money spent!!!
