My mom got stranded today by her 99 Nissan Quest minivan with the v6. It overheated and spewed coolant.

I just drove it home and it's massively detonating at even 10% throttle even after sitting for 20 minutes, and with a normal engine temp. Overheats within a mile or so even driving very gingerly. Massive pinging all the while.

- Oil on dipstick and under cap is clean
- No white smoke out of the tailpipe
- Plenty of power, strong, smooth
- Can be difficult to start

It "seems" like the ignition is about 20degrees too far advanced. But maybe the detonation is a symptom of something else, not the cause.

Any ideas?

Sounds like it's running super lean. Not sure why though.

Only thing I can think of is super lean or something is way out out of time.

Jumped timing belt?
Good fuel pressure?

Puzzle solved. It was actually just a split radiator hose, and the detonation was the symptom of a SUPER hot engine, not the cause. The hose split was hidden and right next to the overflow tank, which was wet, which led me to believe that the tank (which still had coolant in it) had overflowed. I should have recognized that the motor had not cooled down completely, but since there was still coolant in the tank I guessed that it was cool.

Amazingly I replaced the hose, filled it up, and it *seems* to be running great. Time will tell though :)
